The vendor smiled and asked, "Would you prefer a nightmare or a memory?"

That was when Alex finally felt he had found a way to break through the wall inside him—an emotional barrier that had kept him from seeing the origin of his fefobia.

—I want... no, I need a memory, sir. Something very old —he said, looking at the vendor with a hint of anguish but determined in his request.

—Very well, young man. Let's dig a little into your memory and take a trip to that past you desire. Just think about what time in your life it happened and drink this special brew; it will take you back to that day.

Alex took the glass the vendor offered him. The liquid inside was strange—a light green, somewhat pasty color, unpleasant to the eye and to the nose. Its half-rotten smell would discourage anyone from trying it, but the boy gathered his courage and drank it in one gulp.

Instantly, everything seemed to spin. He saw the merchant's face distort, widening and then shrinking, and his smile looked even more macabre on his now tiny head.

—Now sleep, boy, and travel beyond —he heard the vendor say in a strangely high-pitched voice, until he finally collapsed to the floor.

Suddenly, he heard a familiar voice. He instantly turned to his side and managed to observe what was happening through the crack in the closet door.

He saw himself as a child in that closet, looking through the slits too. And the scene was monstrous. His grandfather—the man he loved above all else, the guardian who always smiled at him, told him stories, and took care of him—was now holding the weak, badly injured body of a dying man, whom he was beating again and again without mercy.

The poor man didn't scream; he only writhed. Faced with the heartbreaking scene, Alex wanted to run, but his legs felt so heavy that he couldn't. Without meaning to, he leaned too far against the closet door, and it opened. His grandfather turned to see who was there, and the boy could see that familiar face now covered in blood and fury. His eyes were not those of the kind grandfather; they were the eyes of a beast.

The boy ran, but the grandfather dropped the body of the now lifeless man and ran after Alex. He caught up to him and said forcefully:
—I'm not a bad man, Alex. That guy was an evil person, and he deserved it. Do you understand?

Alex stopped breathing, and in that instant, something inside him shattered. His fefobia stemmed from that moment when the grandfather he believed in and admired as a great man turned into the cruelest villain.

Suddenly, Alex came back to his senses. He was next to the vendor's stall, waking up gasping for air.
The vendor stared at him fixedly: —Did you find it? —asked the merchant.
—Yes —the boy replied, stunned and sobbing, and at that moment, he walked out of the shop.

—Wait, young man. The memory is yours now. But never forget: the past cannot be erased, it can only be relived —he said, and his smile stretched unnaturally wide.
Alex turned and walked away from the place. What he relived marked him, but he would never let it affect him again.
