In the movie, Ranbir Kapoor as Barfi has played the lead role as an interesting romantic hero. The movie stars Ileana D'Cruz as Shruti and Priyanka Chopra as Jhilmil in the lead roles. Saurabh Shukla as Inspector Sudhanshu Dutta, Ashish Vidyarthi as Durjoy Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta as Ranjeet Sengupta, Roopa Ganguly as Mrs. Ghosh, Uday Tikekar as Mr. Ghosh, Haradhan Bandopadhyay as Daju, Arun Bali as Jhilmil's grandfather, Preeti Dayal as Mrs. Durjoy Chatterjee and Bholaraj Sapkota as Bhola.

In the beginning of the movie, a philanthropist named Shruti runs a school for the hearing impaired and there Shruti tells her stories to her students. Where it is first known, the main character of the movie Barfi Sahib dies after shooting his last picture. The reason why he is being respected is because of the instructive and realistic qualities that we do not currently see in a healthy and normal human being. All those noble and good qualities were full in this speech-impaired and hearing-impaired hero.
In 1978, Police Officer Dutta went to arrest Barfi from his Kolkata home and Barfi escaped and ducked into the police station, prompting Police Officer Dutta to take him to his Darjeeling police station and punish him. Shruti leaves her husband to save Barfi. After that we see those days of Darjeeling's past and how Shruti finds our hero Barfi. On the day Shruti came to Darjeeling with her father, she first saw Barfi's interesting work and realized that Barfi could neither speak nor hear.
After that, Barfi proposes to Shruti and learns that Shruti is engaged. However, the two develop a good friendship and eventually fall in love. But due to the brutal reality, Shruti's family doesn't accept their love due to Barfi being disabled and Barfi smiles after understanding everything. The question is, will Barfi be able to forget his loved ones? Will Shruti find love in her husband?
On the other hand, Barfi is being punished by police officer Dutta for robbing the bank and kidnapping Jhilmil, the granddaughter of the richest man in town. As it turns out, Barfi is forced to commit robberies for his father's operation and does not kidnap Jhilmil. Jhilmil is the daughter of Barfi's father's owner and the two are good friends since childhood. However, while escaping from the bank robbery, Barfi finds someone kidnapping Jhilmil, Barfi escapes with the car and takes Jhilmil to his home.
Jhilmil and Barfi's friendship deepens and it is seen that Jhilmil does not want to be separated from Barfi in any way. As a result, Barfi and Jhilmil continue to live together in Kolkata. After 6 long years Barfi finds Shruti in her shop and Shruti goes to Barfi's house and realizes all her mistakes by seeing Jhilmil there. While the three of them are traveling together, Jhilmil suddenly goes missing and the police officers plan to punish Jhilmil for the crime of kidnapping.
Shruti then goes to Kolkata again with Barfi and there Shruti realizes how much Barfi loves Jhilmil. It is seen that Barfi finds a phone number written by Jhilmil and finds out that the number is the number of a disabled care center. Barfi and Shruti go to the care center and start looking for Jhilmil. As a result Barfi finds her love Jhilmil and Shruti sacrifices her love to fulfill Barfi and Jhilmil's love. Also seen, Barfi and Jhilmil died simultaneously of old age.
