Introduction
I'm back with my weekly post for Gods Unchained. Since there's a new set and I have most of the cards from this set, I want to explore some new deck possibilities. Today I want to take a glance at Olympian War.
My Deck & Analysis
I played an aggro Olympian War deck. The boss monster card to this deck is Reios, The Old Wolf. So the whole point of this deck is to win early and apply board pressure by buffing creatures and trading. Well this is what I had in mind when I made the deck.
You can find the link to the decklist here.
I tried to keep this deck mostly Olympian. I only had one non Olympian creature which was Oddi, Valka's Herald which is a very strong 3 mana card for war. After playing two games with this deck, I felt that the deck was super weak. There's just not many strong Olympian cards for the early game trades. Even though this was an "aggro deck", it just felt too slow for me. If they added some more Olympians with blitz I think there would be more potential for this deck. I found that Village Vendor is actually weaker than I thought. Sitting at 2 health is just too weak it gets removed too quickly. I also found an interesting combo that ally can proc twice with Parthene Guardian. Parthene Guardian can proc Village Vendor's ally twice. Anyways if I was to maybe mix these Olympians with other cards like Woodcutter Imp maybe this deck would be viable as well but it would ruin the whole point of the Olympian theme.
There were some cards I was missing that I felt could've helped this deck. I've included a picture below. I think the two that would help the most is Commander Pyros and Hephaestus. Commander Pyros is actually affordable so I'll have to look into buying this card. As for Hephaestus it's a bit too expensive for me unfortunately.
As I was looking at improving the deck I made, I came across some strong Olympian cards at a higher mana which we can take a look at from the picture below. I think with the current Olympian cards it could be actually viable to play a control Olympian war deck. I think Olympian war could be played with some of these strong higher mana legendaries with a call to arms. Call to arms could also help Village Vendor's weakness since it increases the health by 2 which makes its slightly more durable. Of course this is all theory and it needs to be tested so we can see if it actually works or not. Sadly, I don't have the money to test this out so I hope someone that can afford a strong Olympian control war deck can give it a shot and let us know how it performs.
In conclusion, I think a pure aggro Olympian war sucks but there's a chance that control Olympian war could be viable. Hopefully in the future, we might see some new Olympian neutral or war cards that can help improve aggro Olympian war. I guess if you really want to force an Olympian war deck you will have to add in some non-Olympian cards to the deck as well if you want to be competitive. Feel free to leave some comments if you think I'm wrong. I would love to see or hear about a strong aggro Olympian deck that actually works competitively and can win consistently.
