Introduction

I'm here to share my Battle Mage Secrets blog post for the Battle Mage Secrets Challenge. The theme featured this week is Going the Distance. In this ruleset, only ranged units can be used in the battle.

My Strategy & Tips For Going the Distance Ruleset

In this ruleset, it's pretty straightforward and there isn't much diversity in terms of cards since it's super limited to only ranged units. A tip for this ruleset is using units with dual types of attacks for example, melee and ranged or magic and ranged. Some units that fit this are Drybone Raider, Runemancer Florre and Tatiana Blade and many other units. For the units with mixed melee, you can place them in the front so you get someone that can attack at the frontline. Another no brainer is using units with the close range ability so it will let them attack still when they reach the first position.

As for the summoners, some ideal summoners to play are the ones that give bonus to range damage or reducing range damage as well as summoners with return fire. Some examples of these summoners are Yodin Zaku, Ilthain, Quix the Devious, Mimosa Nightshade, General Sloan and Lir Deepswimmer. If you have none of these types of summoners, then playing a summoner that gives armor is probably the last alternative choice.

In addition to that another tip, is to see if you can play a ranged unit with headwinds for example Queen of Crows and Ash Mirage. Decreasing that ranged damage is super useful since you know the opponent has to used ranged units. Finally, a last tip is swiftness. Honestly, having that speed advantage and being able to attack first can help get a free win.

The Battle

I played this battle on my account, shawnnft. The battle link can be found here. This battle is in brawls and it is in fray 12 which is Wild Diamond. The ruleset for this battle was Going the Distance, Fog of War and Earthquake. It was 53 mana cap with the dragon and fire element banned.

Discussing My Lineup

Summoner, Kelya - I chose Kelya because it was my best choice since I did not have any of those ideal summoners that I mentioned in my tips since I don't own them or rented them. Another good reason to choose Kelya was the armor to protect 1 hit from earthquake damage since there's not many ranged units available that have flying as well.

First Position, Gargoyle Devil - I chose Gargoya Devil to be in this position since it has close range ability so it can attack infront. If I recall, I either don't own a Drybone Raider or it was only level 1 which made me think it wasn't strong enough to play.

Second Position, Poseidon - I chose Poseidon to be in this position as the backup frontline after Gargoyle Devil was taken down. It also had shield so it can reduce any ranged damage and earthquake damage to it by half.

Third Position, Angelic Mandarin - The main purpose of Angelic Mandarin was to heal my Wavebrood.

Fourth Position, Merdhampir - The purpose of this card was to cripple a target since I didn't know if he was going to play a healer like Cornealus.

Fifth Position, Swamp Spitter - The main purpose for Swamp Spitter was to add the armor back to the team with armor repair. I was hoping it could stall well enough if it ended up in the 1v1. The armor repair would help it win most 1v1 against other ranged units.

Last Position, Wavebrood - Wavebrood was my main tank since it has taunt. I was also hoping the return fire ability would help out his choice.

Analysis of The Battle

If you watched the battle, I got destroyed by the opponent. If you noticed, my weekly battle mage secret posts, I don't mind sharing battles where I lost because I learn from losing and I'm not ashamed of that. I think too truly get better is sometimes losing to see what you could have done better or just to remember the opponent's lineup for next time. You can see he played the mix melee and ranged unit Drybone Raiders infront which is a more ideal frontline in this type of ruleset. The opponent also used headwinds to reduce my range damage and double swiftness to attack first. My opponent played perfectly in this battle I think and I really didn't have a chance.

Do I Like Going the Distance Ruleset?

I actually don't really like this ruleset. You probably could have known from the title of this post. Basically means this ruleset needs to get away from me. First of all it's boring to play and secondly sometimes I just don't have the best cards to play this ruleset as it's so niche.
