I'm here to share my Battle Mage Secrets blog post for the Battle Mage Secrets Challenge. The theme featured this week is Back To Basics. In this ruleset, all creatures have no abilities. I will be sharing some strategies that are good to use in this ruleset as well as feature one of my battles under this ruleset.
In Back To Basics ruleset, the summoner is the one of the most crucial choices. For example in a Back To Basics + Earthquake ruleset, you can play Brighton Bloom and usually that should be a free win if your opponent doesn't do the same as well. Normally in back to basic it's best to play magic or counter magic but sometimes it's also good to play ranged. It's also important to play with creatures with good stats, good speed, health and damage is ideal for a solid team in this ruleset.
I played this battle on my alt account, shawnnfty. The battle link can be found here. This battle is in brawl; the fray is #1 in tier 2 which is novice league all cards playable. The ruleset for this battle was Rise of the Commons, Back to Basics and Going the Distance. It was a 37 mana cap battle with only fire and life element usable. This was a home battle so if somehow it ended up as I draw I would actually win!
Summoner, Yodin Zaku - I chose Yodin as the summoner because this is a strong summoner in back to basics ruleset especially when we have going the distance ruleset which allows only ranged monsters to be played. Yodin is usually a free win in these scenarios and it's also super strong in Novice League as all cards are level 1.
First Position, Molten Ash Golem - I chose Molten Ash Golem to be in the front because it had the most health for a good amount of mana cost so it was the best to tank in this ruleset.
Second Position, Gobson Bomber - I chose Gobson Bomber since I had no choice. It was ranged only ruleset and I actually didn't have that many ranged cards to choose from. It was the one with best stats and a cannon fodder for after my Molten Ash Golem died.
*Third Position, Supply Runner - The purpose of this card was to do damage since it had a decent attack and it also had good speed. The health was good for it to be the third tank.
Fourth Position, FIre Elemental - The purpose of Fire Elemental was also to do damage. It had great speed stat and damage stat to be DPS. I was lucky that this card was available as ghost card if not I might have had to rent on the spot to fill this team. I'm still curious whether or not they will just remove ghost cards as they are kind of pointless now in my opinion.
Fifth Position, Sarius - The main purpose for Sarius is to do damage as well. It's my gladius card and it has good stats to fill its spot here. Most gladius cards are good to play and this is one of them if the ruleset needs ranged for fire element.
Final Position, Spark Pixies - Spark Pixies is a beast card in the backline. Usually it's good for fending off sneak but in this case it was purely for speed and damage. I placed this card in the back since it had the lowest health.
My line up worked out great. Honestly, I thought I lost when I saw the Ilthain. Ilthain is a super good summoner in going the distance since it gives return fire to whole team. Since the battle can only use ranged monsters, it's guaranteed to return the damage back. For those that don't know this return fire also applies to the damage from blast; this is part of the reason why I thought I lost. However, if you watched the battle I barely clutched it out. Thankfully my Molten Ash Golem had a good amount of health and stayed alive. It also helped that some of my monsters were faster than his even with the 1 speed buff from their summoner.
To answer this, I don't really like this ruleset. It's always a guessing game whether the opponent will choose magic, range or counter magic. This is just my own personal feeling toward this ruleset. Also, I find the abilities make the game more fun with all the buff and debuffs especially in the higher leagues.
