Deventer, Netherlands is a historic old village now grown into a city. Beautiful old buildings and churches make this a must destination for a lover of architecture. On my visit, I arrived after dark but still took a stroll to start my discoveries. While doing so I came across St. Nicholas Church, a Dutch Gothic mastery built in 1209. It's dark twin towers loomed as I rounded a corner. The sight triggered my imagination to think of all the people for all the years that have passed here before. It felt powerful and ominous.

Later I returned, this time in the day. I was pleasantly surprised to find the building open and welcoming. No longer a church but preserved and cared for, now a public space for events or music. It was also bright and beautiful and still held all the detail of its previous glory. And I was virtually alone....alone in silence. And such a different experience from that I had the night before.

And I'm so glad I returned.
