Path of Adventure - App Review

A fun text-driven adventure right in the palm of your hand. Path of Adventure features a solid UI, decent story, and random story elements to keep you coming back.

I stumbled upon Path of Adventure when I was looking for good story games. It was suggested by the google play store as something I might enjoy. It was free with in-app purchases.

The icon shows a similar image to the intro screen of the game. A person stands with one foot resting on a treasure chest. With a sword in hand the person looking out into a valley with a looming castle overhead. Lurking around the castle are a couple of rather large familiar dragon looking creatures.

Selecting New Game Brings up the options for characters. Pupil and Rogue (easy) are the two options you start with. The Pupil is a brief tutorial adventure. Rogue is a longer adventure with various baddies to face. There are some character options that are all locked. These options are Warrior (normal), Assassin (quite hard), Mage (hard), Thief (very hard), Ring-Bearer(ridiculous). By finishing the game with a character the next character in the line is unlocked.

At the time of this writing, I had only completed the tutorial and almost completed the starting rogue character. After a brief explanation of the story, you begin working your way through the Path of Adventure.

Starting off you are given a couple of items to help you out. Sometimes these are two weapons, or a weapon and shield. You may also start the game with a couple of extra items.

The inventory gives you 4 weapon slots. Which gives you the ability to hold a combination of weapons and shields to use during battle. The Rogue has the Ring of LIfe which allows you to heal back every day. A very useful tool in this game.

Your beginning stats give you
Life - 15/15
Defense - 1
Attack - 1
Speed -1
Treasure - 15
With a handy progress tracker.

Your Life value is what gives your character life. Technically YOU give it life by playing. In other games, it’s known as Hit Points or Health Points and it’s definitely the life of the party. In this case, Life is what keeps your character going forward. When this drops to 0, it’s game over man, game over…

The defense value is the amount of damage you can absorb. Weapons and shiels may give you an increase to your defense value allowing you to soak up more damage before taking hit point damage.
Attack value is how well your character does when it deals damage. Like the defense value, weapons and items may modify this value to aid or hinder your damage output.

The speed value helps to determine how well you will dodge. This helps avoid damage taken. Some weapons and shields will modify this value similar to the defense value and attack value mentioned above.
Treasure is the money you gain and use throughout the game. It also adds to the high score when you complete the game.

The inventory gives you a nice Legend to help identify symbols that might come up throughout the game.

The main story window of the game allows you to see your health, defense, attack, speed, treasure, and story progress in handy icons.

As you progress through the story of Path of Adventure you will see a little progress icon show up which shows how you are making progress through the game. On occasion, you will come across a side adventure. This doesn’t progress the main story forward but it may allow you the option to gain items, treasure, equipment and experience points.

When you come across an enemy you get the options to attack with weapons available. When the enemy attacks you are able to block attacks with shields or weapons with defense value. Defeating an enemy gives you a reward of treasure and experience points.

Once you have gained enough experience points to level up you are given an Elixer of Growth. This item allows you to increase one of your stats, or save it for later. Typically when Elixer of Growth is used, you will heal to full health, lose poisons that may have been applied. Your character's health is able to be increased by 5 or raising your defense, attack, and speed by 1 point.

As you progress through the game you will come across helpful NPCs who will give you hints regarding the story that is coming up. After many plays of this game the story has a good variety of stories to keep from repeating itself. As I mentioned above, I have not made it past the rogue yet so I’m not sure what changes occur in the story in characters unlocked after the rogue.

There comes a point in all character's adventure when death comes for them. The hero has fallen to whatever may have happened to it. The story in Path of Adventure is not over though. For a small in-game purchase, you can resurrect yourself.

If you have made a mistake in the story you do have an option to undo actions or undo the current day. Paying a small in-game purchase allows you to have more undo opportunities.

The game is entertaining. It’s quick to hop into your adventure and progress through some levels when you have some downtime. Some of the dialogue and story elements do get repetitive after multiple plays. Though there are enough random elements to keep you going for a while.

Some of the branching stories give you some hard decisions. Paying attention to what comes up during dialogue that gives you hints is very handy. This will usually tell you if you need high strength, high speed, high defense or any item before you reach a certain progress point in the game.

If you like quick adventure games definitely give this a consideration. It is available on Android and iOS.
