Normally when I see games of this style I usually think: "Another retro driving game just like the others". Because, although many of them end up being fun, if we were to compare them with each other we might not find many differences. This is what I thought when I started playing Slipstream, but after a few minutes the game made me change my mind with mechanics that, even if they are not the newest, manage to give it an essence of its own.
1.png
As always here there is no story or anything like that, the game is based solely on driving and racing. As it may be obvious, the goal will be to reach the finish line first than our rivals, but we will have a couple of mechanics that will make things more fun. To begin with, we will have the possibility of rewind 5 seconds in time, this will be a kind of special ability that will have a cooldown time, so we can't abuse it. Normally it is recommended to use this when we have an important crash or we take a curve so badly that the rival manages to overtake us.
2.gif
We will also be able to drift, but drifting here will not be like in other driving games where we only brake and move the car a little to the sides. To drift properly you will have to release the accelerator, step on the brake and then accelerate again, all in a short period of time. This translates into having to make quick button combinations in the middle of corners. And while I know it may sound silly, the reality is that it can become a bit complex to master, especially when you encounter several corners in a row. This makes the game a little bit more difficult, which in turn adds to the fun and makes you feel good when you get it right.

Then there are mechanics that will depend on the game mode, since we will have several to choose from. There will be a mode called World Tour, which will have 5 different stages to overcome. Each stage will have a rival that we will have to beat, at the end of the stage we will see a small sign for us to choose the next map.
4.jpg
Another mode will be called Cannonball. Here we will run through five different tracks, but unlike the previous mode, this will be a continuous race. From the first track we will be all 12 racers. It is basically a race mode, but with an increased duration due to the five tracks in a row.
5.png
Finally there will be the Battle Royale mode. This will be an elimination race where we will drive through several scenarios. The driver who is in last place at the end of the stage will be eliminated, at the end there will only be 1. This is the most interesting mode of all, it manages to keep you tense. We will be able to choose the number of racers, we will have 4, 8, 12 and 16. There will also be other simpler game modes that are not worth mentioning, such as the time trial.
6.png
In all game modes we can always choose which car we want. Some will have better handling, others more speed, etc. Something I didn't like is that you can't customize it, I mean, I can understand that they didn't want to modify the stats because maybe it was too complicated to balance, but I would have liked that at least they let you change the color of the car to your liking.
7.png
Honestly, the game is fine. It's not a wonder by any means, but it does the job of entertaining you for a couple of hours or days. It also has a multiplayer mode in which you can have fun with some friends, however, it is only local, you can not play online. Would I recommend it? Well, personally I decided to play it because I love to try this kind of titles with retro aesthetics, but it is not exactly a game that will change your life, I would say that if you like retro and it caught your attention, it would be good to give it a try, even if it is just to kill your curiosity.
