Lately I'm coming across several platformers that end up being quite good, either for having some element that makes them stand out within this genre or for being so well made that it's a pleasure to play them. In this case I would say that Panzer Paladin applies to both options, being a simple platformer but that manages to introduce small mechanics that make it stand out and most importantly, be fun.

1

The story tells us that out of nowhere strange meteorites began to fall to earth, but it turns out that these meteorites were actually legendary weapons and were scattered in different parts of the world, these weapons are acting as portals to other universes attracting demons and evil beings to the planet.

2

It will be for this reason that Flame, a small android of exploration and rescue, accompanied by his companion Grit, the robot he pilots, will offer to collect all the weapons to stop the growth of the demons and thus prevent the start of a possible cosmic war.

3

In this case I must mention the bosses in the first instance, because the game has a rather curious style of levels. Each legendary weapon will be guarded by a great enemy and will have its own level, the game gives us total freedom to decide how we want to proceed and who we want to defeat first, we can follow our own order. It reminds me a lot of the first Mega-Man where the same mechanic of choosing which enemy we wanted to defeat was used.

4

Once we have chosen the boss in question, we will enter its level. The game is a classic 2D scrolling platformer, we will have our main attack, a small dash in reverse and the typical jump. However, as we defeat enemies they will drop weapons, these weapons we can pick them up and use them, in fact, many times it will be mandatory to do so.

5

Weapons will have a durability that will wear out as we attack, when this durability reaches 0 we will have two options; Let them break and use another one, or "consume" the weapon applying the effect it has, these effects are random and will range from healing us small amounts of lives, increasing our defense and some other offensive effect such as absorbing the vitality of the enemies or doing damage to them.

6

Another thing is that, as you will have been able to appreciate throughout this publication, most of the time we will control Grit (the robot), but there will be times when we will have to leave the control of this and go out to explore ourselves, either to pass through narrow places or to swing with a small whip that we will have. When we are not inside our robot we will have much less life and we will not be able to handle weapons, only whip, so these parts of the level are usually more complex than normal.

7

Once we reach the end of the level we will face the boss in question. The game has a lot of different bosses, which is pretty cool, since you won't feel like you're repeating them at any point. Each one will have its mechanics and designs quite original, in terms of difficulty I did not feel any easier than another, I think they all manage to keep more or less the same level, which by the way is not easy, I would say it is above the standard difficulty.

8

In a way you could say that the levels are quite short, you can get from the beginning of the level to the final boss in less than 20 minutes. And this is interesting, since yes, they are short, but you will only have 3 lives, every time you lose one, you will return to the checkpoints that you will find, when you lose all 3, you will start from zero. In this way they manage to compensate for the short duration of each level, since the game is not so simple, there will be many easy ways to die, either with very precise jumps, annoying enemies, traps and many other things that will prevent you from reaching the final boss with 3 full lives.

9

Finally, every time we lose or are defeated, we will be able to return to the laboratory and, depending on how many weapons we have collected and how many points we have earned, we will have the possibility to spend them to improve our robot a little more. These points will be earned simply by playing and advancing through the levels.

10

At a general level, Panzer Paladin left a very good taste in my mouth, I knew I would like it because of the pixel art design it has, I'm a fan of all that, but the small curious mechanics like getting out of the robot, collecting weapons and that kind of levels in the style of the old Mega Man, managed to captivate me. Highly recommended, always taking into account that it has a slightly high difficulty.
