This is the kind of Indies that prove that you don't need a big studio behind you to create a high quality title. Firewatch is unique, a strange and beautiful experience that will make you feel sad, happy, confused and maybe a little scared.
The game will start telling us through different dialogues the life of our protagonist: Henry. By way of summary, we are a 39 year old man with a wife sick of early dementia (Alzheimer). One day when the situation was untenable, we made the decision to take her to a nursing home, and although the nursing home takes better care of her than we could, inside we kept blaming ourselves and questioning if it was the right decision. So, to avoid all those thoughts, we decided to take a job in the middle of the forest as a forest fire watcher.
I would define the game as a graphic adventure, because, although we will be able to move through different areas of the forest, the exploration will always follow the thread of the plot. Inside the forest we will meet our boss: Deliah. She will be our only company during all these months of work, we will communicate using a small radio. Whenever we talk to her we will be able to choose between several answers.
So, as a watchman our job will be to take care of different tasks inside the forest. Deliah will communicate with us at all times and she will be the one to tell us what we should do and where we should go. We will have a map and a compass that we will use to orient ourselves and reach the objectives.
At first the story will be fairly simple; we'll start with tasks like chasing away a couple of drunken teenage girls from the forest, collecting supplies from a supply box, etc. But as the days go by, things will become more and more murky and mysterious. This is one of those games you can only play once and it pays not to find out anything before you play it, because it has a lot of plot twists and major revelations.
How your relationship with your boss develops is one of the most important and well-done points of the game. You come to the forest seeking solitude and escape from your problems, but your boss is constantly calling you and talking to you about unimportant facts, seeking conversation, joking around, etc. At first you don't like her, you even find her annoying, but as events unfold and days go by, you begin to feel affection, and the same thing happens to her. All this over the radio, we never see each other in person.
In addition to the conversations with our boss, the "mechanics" of the game are based on climbing, going down ledges, exploring certain parts of the forest, finding a key object that allows us to continue with the story, and so on. And I name them this way because, being an adventure game, I don't really consider them mechanics, since most of them will be carried out by pressing a button and letting the character do everything. But that's okay, the important thing in this kind of games is usually the plot.
Visually the game is a beauty, it takes advantage of being in a forest very well, showing you sunsets, sunrises or simply wooded areas that will make you stop for a second to appreciate how good it looks.
It is difficult to talk about these games without making too many spoilers, but I don't find much sense to make a post telling the whole story, so I prefer to do it this way, compacting the plot as best as possible and mentioning only some aspects. Honestly it is a game that I highly recommend, it lasts about 4 hours and keeps you interested in the plot at all times. If I had to criticize something it would be the ending, it leaves you with many doubts and wanting to know more, but maybe that's what they were looking for.
