I think it's one of the few times I see such a strange mix of genres. Cursed to golf is a roguelike that combines the mechanics of the genre with the sport of Golf, resulting in a rather curious, original and surprisingly challenging title, as we will see a lot of replayability throughout the adventure. I love it because the developers define the game itself as a "Golf-Like".
The story is not very deep or anything like that; We will start directly in a golf championship controlling a character nicknamed "the champion", as the championship develops we will see that the sky begins to darken, to the point of starting to rain. Unfortunately, just before reaching the last hole, lightning strikes our golf club, causing our death and sending us directly to golf purgatory, a kind of hell inhabited by different spirits fanatics of the sport. These spirits will test us through 18 different holes, if we manage to overcome them we will be able to ascend, which will mean reviving and returning to our normal life.
We will advance through several golf courses that will have their own special characteristics, each course will have a hole that will represent the end of the level, once we reach it, we will complete the stage and move on to the next one. The main mechanics of the game is based on calculating the strength and angle of the stroke, however, we will also have at our disposal a number of clubs that we can choose when hitting, each club will affect our stroke in a way; Longer range, more height, more precision, etc.
An important detail is that we will have a limited number of strokes throughout the game, this stroke counter will act as our life, if we reach zero and we fail to put the ball in the hole of the level in question, we will have lost and we will have to start from the beginning again. However, throughout the levels there will be small statuettes, if we break them with a shot we will get a certain amount of extra strokes, so many times we will have to evaluate what is more profitable, if we dedicate a stroke to break the statuette or concentrate on advancing to the goal.
At the same time, we will have special cards that will serve as power-ups. These cards will be limited and will be used up when they are used, so it is important to know when to use them to make the best use of them. As for the benefits they give us, we will have from special shots where we can stop time to slow down our ball, turn the ball into a rocket to control it, create tight curves when hitting, back a shot back and many more things that we will discover as we progress.
Although the story tells us that we must overcome a total of 18 holes to move up, this does not mean that they will always be the same, because every time we lose and start again, the holes will change, that is, they are generated procedurally, so technically each hole will always be different, although on many occasions the difference may be minimal and will not cause any effect on the gameplay.
From time to time we will come across some special structure halfway through the course. Sometimes they will be small chests that may contain cards or money, other times it will be a store where we can spend our money to buy power-up cards.
At the end of each zone there will always be the boss level, which we will have to overcome to advance to the next zone. In this case, the confrontations against these bosses will be in the form of a Golf competition; We will start in the field and the winner will be the one who manages to reach the goal first, however, in each of these confrontations we will have a small advantage that will allow us to stop the boss in some way. For example, in the first boss we can find special statuettes scattered around the map, if we break them, the boss will be paralyzed and will lose a turn.
It is a difficult game, just to reach the first boss took me several attempts, although we will have at our disposal many power-ups to make things a little easier, some holes can be very complex with the number of obstacles they have or simply because of the distance you have to travel to reach the goal, which makes it difficult to complete the level in a few strokes.
Despite not being a fan of roguelikes, since I don't really like having to repeat levels, I ended up loving Cursed to golf, thanks in part to its originality. Advancing through the dungeons playing Golf instead of killing monsters as usual, has its charm. And although the difficulty along with having to replay levels from time to time can become frustrating or a bit tiresome, I think it's worth giving it a try, the game has a lot to offer and may end up hooking more than one.
