The young gunslinger Roland Deschain has left his home in Gilead at his father's behest, to avoid the devilish reach of the sorcerer called Marten Broadcloak. Roland has travelled to the barony of Hambry with his ka-tet of friends, Alain and Cuthbert, assuming false identities on the way.
As the trio travels, Roland meets Susan Delgado...and falls in love with her. It's this love that causes Roland to insult Susan when next they meet - as he learns that Susan is being coerced to produce a child with Hambry's mayor...a fate Susan relishes no more than Roland does.
Hambry is under the control of the evil John Farson, enemy of the Affiliation commanded by Roland's father. The authorities in Hambry tell Roland their livestock is weak and mutated, and hide the fact that they are refining oil to power weaopons. They also obscure the truth behind Hambry's deputies: in reality they are a group of ruthless assassins called the Big Coffin Hunters.
In a dingy saloon, Roland, Alain and Cuthbert have a violent encounter with the Coffin Hunters. Though nobody is hurt, the Hunters' leader, Eldred Jonas, tells fellow Hunter Roy Depape of his suspicions about Roland. He might not be the innocent traveler he seems...in fact, he might just be too dangerous to live.
But, unaware of this, Roland - still under the false identity of Will Dearborn - reaches out to his one true love.
