The Young Gunslinger Roland Deschain has left his home in Gilead at his father's behest. Roland has travelled to the barony of Hambry with his ka-tet - his friends Cuthbert and Alain - using false identities.
Roland's mission is to buy horses and, more importantly, to learn if Hambry is under the control of the evil John Farson... and to see if they're refining oil to power weapons that will be used against Gilead and the Affiliation.
Unfortunately, the man who was to be Roland's contact, Patrick Delgado, was killed by Hambry's new deputies - the Big Coffin Hunters, led by the white-haired Eldred Jonas.
Because of his death, Pat Delgado's daughter Susan has been promised to the Mayor of Hambry as his concubine. This fate seems unbearable to her, She attempts to flee into the night, screaming for her dead father - until she encounters a man on horseback...
...and thus did Susan Delgado first meet Roland Deschain.
