Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.

Non mi interessa quasi mai, a parte rari casi (vedi Better Call Saul o L'amica Geniale e pochi altri) parlare nel dettaglio di cosa sia accaduto nel singolo episodio, e men che meno voglio farlo qui al cospetto di un'opera maestosa su cui dobbiamo e vogliamo ancora capire molto in termini generali.
E' molto più importante, a mio avviso, andare a fondo di quello che questi primi episodi ci lasciano, sia in termini relativi che assoluti.

Ci sono 2 aspetti cruciali sui quali possono basarsi, rispetto a The Rings of Power, le nostre sensazioni rispetto a questo mastodontico show.
Il primo è legato al budget mostruoso che la autori e showrunner hanno avuto a disposizione.
Il secondo è connesso al materiale originale ed alla trilogia cinematografica che ha preceduto la serie di oltre una decade.
E' davvero possibile sganciarsi da questi 2 punti nella visione della serie?
A mio avviso no se guardiamo al tema produttivo ed economico mentre dovremmo sempre fare lo sforzo di non pensare al materiale originario da cui una serie è tratta ma questo è un mio focal point da sempre per quanto riguarda gli adattamenti televisivi di romanzi, film o fumetti.
Immaginate di essere tifosi di una squadra di calcio prestigiosissima, che sia il Real Madrid o l Juventus, il Milan o il Liverpool, poco importa ed immaginate, ora, di aver assistito ad una campagna acquisti roboante ed onerosissima dove la vostra squadra ha speso 500 milioni di euro per accaparrarsi campioni su campioni mentre le dirette inseguitrici hanno speso meno della metà.

E' questa, metaforicamente, la posizione in cui vedo The Rings of Power oggi, una serie in una buona posizione di classifica, non al vertice ma con il tempo e le risorse per poter arrivare in cima a fine campionato ma da cui mi sarei atteso un filotto di vittorie schiaccianti sin dal primo istante.
Con quel budget a disposizione era lecito aspettarsi di più. Pensate che, all'epoca del finale di Game of Thrones, la HBO spendeva circa 10-15 milioni ad episodio e quell'annata fu vissuta come un'annata record per la televisione in termini di costi.
Bene, gli Anelli del Potere costa 4-5 volte tanto ad episodio.

As usual, today I am bringing you in a new Preview of an article that in a few days or weeks you will see In the Mind of a SerialFiller, my blog entirely focused on the world of TV series and of which, for the past few months, I have decided to give you constantly, in advance of what I will publish, most of the posts you will see at www.serialfiller.org.

I'm not really interested in going into what happened. I don't care much about eviscerating the meeting between the elf Galadriel and the people of Numenor, just as I don't think it's important today to elucidate on the mysterious identity of the King of Southland pretending to be someone else, just as I don't think it counts for anything to talk about the orcs and the advent of Aldar or the hitherto fairly useless histories of the Peloponnes.
I am almost never, except in rare cases (see Better Call Saul or The Brilliant Friend and a few others) interested in talking in detail about what happened in the individual episode, and much less do I want to do so here in the presence of a majestic work about which we still need and want to understand a great deal in general terms.
It is far more important, in my view, to get to the bottom of what these early episodes leave us with, both in relative and absolute terms.

There are 2 crucial aspects on which our feelings about this mammoth show can be based with respect to The Rings of Power.
The first is related to the monstrous budget that the writer and showrunner had at their disposal.
The second is related to the original material and the film trilogy that preceded the series by more than a decade.
Is it really possible to disengage from these 2 points in viewing the series?
In my opinion, no if we look at the production and economic issue while we should always make the effort not to think about the original material from which a series is taken but this has been a focal point of mine for as long as I can remember regarding TV adaptations of novels, movies or comics.
Imagine that you are a fan of a very prestigious soccer team, be it Real Madrid or Juventus, Milan or Liverpool, it matters little and imagine, now, that you have witnessed a bombastic and onerous buying campaign where your team has spent 500 million euros to nab champions upon champions while the direct pursuers have spent less than half.
Would you settle, at the beginning of the year, for a few wins without a game, a couple of scorching defeats, a few yawning draws with newly promoted teams and a fifth place in the standings behind less titled, equipped and richer teams than you?
I don't think so; I think you would be pretty furious fans.
That is, metaphorically, the position in which I see The Rings of Power today, a series in a good position in the standings, not at the top but with the time and resources to be able to get to the top at the end of the season but from which I would have expected a string of crushing victories from the first moment.
With that budget at hand, it was fair to expect more. Just think, at the time of the Game of Thrones finale, HBO was spending about 10-15 million per episode, and that year was experienced as a record year for television in terms of cost.
Well, Rings of Power costs 4-5 times as much per episode.
Not thinking about it, having knowledge of it, is really exhausting.
Then the issue related to casting, which, frankly, I found to be a failure, remains alive. After 3 episodes there is still not a single actor or character that has gotten under my skin.
Taking a very low-budget series like The Bear (review here) I can think of at least 3 characters that after 2 episodes I could no longer forget.
It doesn't mean much but it certainly means something.
Bridges continue to be built for the future of a show from which something was expected immediately.
I am sure that little by little the clouds will clear and the sun will shine again on Middle Earth or it will be the viewers who will become orcs.
