Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.
Il cast, già di altissima levatura grazie ai 2 nomi sopracitati, si arricchisce di attori del calibro di Michael Sthulbarg (Dopesick, Your Honor), Parker Posey, Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) e Juliette Binoche, fra gli altri.
La storia vera da cui The Staircase è tratta è molto più ampia del misfatto a cui si riferisce, avendo tratto parte del materiale a cui si ispira anche da un documentario del 2018 trasmesso su Netflix e di cui nella serie si fa ampio riferimento.
Aldilà della storia, sicuramente torbida, intrigante e misteriosa, quello che emerge fortemente è il tema legato al concetto di verità, e se vogliamo di giustizia, sul quale l'intera serie sembra poggiarsi.
Ai margini di un omicidio/incidente sul quale è difficile determinare chi sia l'assassino (ammesso che esista un assassino e non si tratti di un fatale incidente), è giusto accanirsi contro qualcuno o in favore di qualcun altro appellandosi alla vuotissima parola "verità"?
Durante tutta la serie ci viene presentato il personaggio di Michael Peterson da tutte le angolature possibili.
Lo vediamo vestire i panni dello scrittore e dell'amico, del colpevole e dell'innocente, del padre e del marito, del fratello e dell'aspirante politico.
In ognuna di queste vesti lo vediamo sempre più abbarbicato a delle foltissime ambiguità.
Ama Kathleen ma ha degli istinti passionali accesissimi verso altri uomini.
Adora i propri figli ma è spesso duro e ingiusto con loro.
E' affabile e imponente ma anche molto sprezzante nei confronti di chi si interfaccia con lui.
E' ironico ma irascibile.
E' romantico ma cinico.
Michael Peterson sembra essere l'emblema della duplicità, cosi come duplice (nel senso di sdoppiato) sembra essere il casus belli che lo porta ad essere incriminato per l'omicidio di Kathleen.
Che Michael abbia omesso particolari importanti e che non abbia compreso appieno quanto stesse accadendo quella notte è innegabile.
Che sia stato lui a massacrare la moglie era qualcosa che andava fortemente dimostrato.
Molte prove finivano per puntare a lui ma quasi ciascuna di esse poteva essere facilmente confutata. Era giusto, dunque, ammanettarlo, imprigionarlo e buttare la chiave?
E se Michael fosse stato "solo" una "shitty person" ma non un'omicida?
E se Kathleen fosse stata davvero l'amore della sua vita alla quale mai avrebbe torto un capello?

As usual, today I am bringing you inside a new Preview of an article that in a few days or weeks you will see In the Mind of a SerialFiller, my blog entirely focused on the world of TV series and of which, for the past few months, I have decided to constantly give you, in advance of what I will publish, most of the posts you will see at www.serialfiller.org.
Do you often wonder about the concept of truth?
Have you not missed a date with Colin Firth since you saw "The King's Speech"?
Are you interested in true news stories?
HBO gives us one of the best thrillers of the year, and it does so by bringing to the screen an actor of such high caliber that it is hard to even imagine that a series starring him could be forgettable.
Colin Firth is Michael Peterson in The Staircase, an 8-episode miniseries about a news story from 2001, the year in which Kathleen Peterson, played here by Toni Collette (Unbelievable), was found in her husband's arms in her own home, bleeding and lifeless body.
If you have not yet seen the series but want to pique your curiosity, I refer you to the first impression post on the show.
The cast, already of very high caliber thanks to the 2 names mentioned above, is enriched by the likes of Michael Sthulbarg (Dopesick, Your Honor), Parker Posey, Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), and Juliette Binoche, among others.
The true story from which The Staircase is based is much broader than the misdeed it refers to, having also drawn some of the material it is inspired by from a 2018 documentary that aired on Netflix and is referred to extensively in the series.
Beyond the story, which is certainly murky, intriguing, and mysterious, what emerges strongly is the theme related to the concept of truth, and if you will, justice, on which the entire series seems to rest.
On the margins of a murder/accident about which it is difficult to determine who the murderer is (assuming there is a murderer and it is not a fatal accident), is it right to turn on someone or in favor of someone else by appealing to the very empty word "truth"?
In the present case, Michael Peterson appeared in everyone's eyes as a valuable husband, a good parent, a decent man. Does discovering that so outstanding he was not allow us to label him, without any inner debate, as an unequivocal murderer of the wife he would have loved so much?
In the face of circumstantial evidence and a constant and never questioned profession of innocence, is it fair to deem the man a brutal murderer and a vile human being?
Throughout the series we are introduced to the character of Michael Peterson from all possible angles.
We see him play the role of the writer and the friend, the guilty and the innocent, the father and the husband, the brother and the aspiring politician.
In each of these guises we see him increasingly clinging to thick ambiguities.
He loves Kathleen but has fiery passionate instincts toward other men.
He adores his children but is often harsh and unfair to them.
He is affable and commanding but also very contemptuous of those who interface with him.
He is ironic but short-tempered.
He is romantic but cynical.
Michael Peterson seems to be the epitome of duplicity, just as dual (in the sense of doubled) seems to be the casus belli that leads him to be indicted for Kathleen's murder.
That Michael omitted important details and did not fully understand what was happening that night is undeniable.
That he was the one who slaughtered his wife was something that had to be strongly demonstrated.
Many pieces of evidence ended up pointing to him but almost every one of them could be easily refuted. Was it right, then, to handcuff him, imprison him and throw away the key?
What if Michael had been "just" a "shitty person" but not a murderer?
What if Kathleen had really been the love of his life to whom he would never have harmed a hair?
Better 100 guilty outside than one innocent inside as a passage from the Digest Code of Justinian memory more or less recited.
Michael may be one of those innocents who has paid the price for his own cumbersome and contemptible personality.
And so the question, indeed the questions, come back.
