Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.

Prima di parlarvi dei primi 2 episodi dello show, in queste first impressions, è bene fare un cenno alla genesi della serie.
Tratta da una storia vera ma nata dall'adattamento dell'omonimo libro di Sheri Fink, edito nel 2013. Acquisiti i diritti del suddetto libro, Scott Rudin, produttore dello show, aveva partorito l'idea di dare il via ad un progetto con Ryan Murphy per rendere questa storia parte integrante della celebre serie antologica ideata da Murphy stesso e che tutti conosciamo con il nome di American Crime Story.
Ad una prima stagione, clamorosamente riuscita, nella quale fu sviscerato il processo contro O.J.Simpson, seguì una seconda stagione incentrata sull'assassinio del nostro connazionale Gianni Versace. La terza stagione avrebbe dovuto vertere proprio sull'uragano Katrina.
Cosi non fu, per motivi che tutt'oggi non conosciamo. La terza stagione di American Crime Story, infatti, avrebbe visto la luce nel 2021 e sarebbe stata incentrata sull'impeachment più famoso del secolo, quello contro l'allora presidente degli Stati Uniti d'America, Bill Clinton. Nacque American Crime Story: Impeachment (qui trovate la mia recensione).

Sulle 2 donne graverà il peso di decisioni impossibili e di tragedie imminenti.
Susan, infermiera di lungo corso, si troverà ad essere designata come responsabile dell'intera emergenza che l'uragano Katrina irrimediabilmente provocherà. Quella che pareva essere una tempesta tropicale come un'altra diverrà un disastro che ancora oggi, a 18 anni di distanza, ricordiamo con commozione.
Anna Pou, d'altro canto sarà chiamata ad essere uno dei responsabili di reparto dell'ospedale, collegamento interno fondamentale per dirimere tutte le questioni che si presenteranno nel corso dell'impetuosa tempesta.

Quello che, con grande sconcerto ma altrettanta rassegnazione, emergerà è che l'ospedale non era assolutamente pronto ad affrontare l'emergenza. Nessun piano di evacuazione nelle procedure, dispositivi di emergenza facilmente messi ko alla prima tempesta, generatori di emergenza posti laddove l'acqua avrebbe potuto più facilmente sommergerli e metterli fuori uso.

La vera catastrofe, infatti, nacque dopo, nacque in seguito alla rottura degli argini di una diga che avrebbe provocato l'inondazione che tutti conosciamo.
La paura e la sorpresa con la quale gli abitanti di New Orleans apprendono, da testimoni oculari, che tutto sta andando a rotoli ci trasferisce un senso di sgomento e di terrore che deve essere stato lo stesso che i presenti devono avere vissuto.
Di fronte a catastrofi del genere la scritta e l'invocazione più "in voga" è quella del titolo di questo post: God Help Us!
La verità è che la tragedia dell'uragano Katrina è una tragedia che vede l'uomo al centro di tutto, come sempre, corroso dalla sua ansia speculativa e dalla sua fame di soldi e successo, fame che impediscono di essere cautelativi, anticipando eventi del genere grazie ad opportuni piani di evacuazione, progetti a lungo termine e manutenzione ordinaria.
La natura devasta le città solo quando le città glielo consentono, non mitigando gli effetti dei cambiamenti climatici prima e non fronteggiando imminenti catastrofi nella maniera opportuna, poi.

Apple TV Plus sports one of those miniseries that in content and structure is hard to pass up.
Five Days at Memorial is an 8-episode series, based on a true story the one related to the overwhelming arrival of the infamous Hurricane Katrina, a hurricane that in the now distant August 31, 2005 wiped out the city of New Orleans, dragging thousands of people into the mud and water, people who lost their homes, their cars, their lives in one of the most impressive environmental disasters in recent human history.

Before telling you about the first 2 episodes of the show, in these first impressions, it is good to give a nod to the genesis of the series.
Based on a true story but born from the adaptation of Sheri Fink's book of the same name, published in 2013. Having acquired the rights to the aforementioned book, Scott Rudin, producer of the show, had hatched the idea of kicking off a project with Ryan Murphy to make this story an integral part of the celebrated anthology series conceived by Murphy himself and which we all know as American Crime Story.
A resoundingly successful first season, in which the trial against O.J.Simpson was eviscerated, was followed by a second season focused on the murder of our compatriot Gianni Versace. The third season was supposed to focus precisely on Hurricane Katrina.
This was not the case, for reasons we still do not know today. The third season of American Crime Story, in fact, would have seen the light of day in 2021 and would have focused on the most famous impeachment of the century, the one against the then president of the United States of America, Bill Clinton. American Crime Story: Impeachment (find my review here) was born.
About five years late, Five Days At The Memorial arrives on screens, finding a home no longer on FX but on Apple TV Plus.
Starring in the show are Cherry Jones (24, The Handmaid's Tale) and Vera Farmiga (Hawkeye), who play, respectively, Susan Mulderick, emergency manager of the (former) Memorial hospital, and Dr. Anna Pou.
The 2 women will bear the brunt of impossible decisions and impending tragedies.
Susan, a longtime nurse, will find herself designated as in charge of the entire emergency that Hurricane Katrina will irrevocably cause. What appeared to be just another tropical storm will become a disaster that we still remember with emotion 18 years later.
Anna Pou, on the other hand will be called upon to be one of the hospital's department heads, a crucial internal liaison to settle all the issues that will arise in the course of the raging storm.

What will emerge, with great bewilderment but equal resignation, is that the hospital was in no way prepared for the emergency. No evacuation plan in procedures, emergency equipment easily knocked out in the first storm, emergency generators placed where the water could most easily have submerged and knocked them out.
The hapless Susan is confronted with something enormously larger than herself, a strong and organized woman but totally unprepared to take charge of such a situation, lacking the support of the all-male chain of command, which is careful not to get its hands dirty in such a difficult situation.
She will be left alone, called upon to organize an unexpected but very predictable evacuation, save 2,000 lives (so many humans inside the hospital, and foresee the unpredictable.
What is striking, thanks in part to the alternating images between fiction and reality, is that, in itself, Hurricane Katrina had not had the devastating effects we all know, at least not immediately and at least not in its destructive phase.

The fear and surprise with which the people of New Orleans learn, from eyewitnesses, that everything is falling apart transfers to us a sense of dismay and terror that must have been the same as those present must have experienced.
In the face of such catastrophes, the most "in vogue" inscription and invocation is the one in the title of this post: God Help Us!
The truth is that the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina is a tragedy in which man is at the center of everything, as always, corroded by his speculative anxiety and his hunger for money and success, hungers that prevent us from being precautionary, anticipating such events through appropriate evacuation plans, long-term projects and routine maintenance.
Nature devastates cities only when cities allow it to, by not mitigating the effects of climate change first and not coping with impending disasters in the appropriate manner later.
In between are many ordinary, common stories of patients anxious about their loved ones at home and relatives and friends at home wondering how their mothers, children, and husbands are doing in their hospital beds.
And then there is Anna, at the mercy of events inside the hospital and stunned by her inability to connect with her husband, who ended up who knows where in the waters that swept over the city.
All in a scant 40 minutes per episode. No frills. Without long-windedness. And for that matter without too many reasons not to be pinned among the TV series to catch up on this summer sunset.
