Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.
Il bello è che, nonostante lo shock, lo stratagemma funziona e come se funziona.
Steve Carrel (The Morning Show, The Office, Space Force) è lo psicologo sopra menzionato. Il suo nome è Alan Strauss e sembra essere uno di quei dottori di cui fidarsi, che han scritto libri famosi e che per la salute mentale dei propri pazienti inventerebbero qualsiasi terapia, purchè sia nei limiti dell'etica e della legge.
Dove è che il pilot riesce a sovvertire le regole?
Andate oltre, andate oltre il poster e lo saprete (o meglio ancora guardate il pilot).
Che FX fosse, da sempre, una miniera d'oro dove trovare pepite di tutti i tipi, da Sons Of Anarchy ad American Crime Story, da Legion ad Atlanta, da What We Do In The Shadows al recentissimo The Bear, era cosa nota.
The Patient si inserisce nel solco della tradizione della cable tv statunitense, regalandoci una trama originalissima ma anche una struttura, che per quanto non unica, rappresenta, sicuramente, una rarità.
The Patient, infatti, è una serie tv che ha il formato di una comedy ma la sostanza di un drama. In soldoni, ci troveremo di fronte ad uno show da 20 minuti ad episodio (Hallelujah!) ma che si atteggia (e fa bene) da drama, da ottimo thriller psicologico. E' una goduria perchè riesce a condensare in poco tempo quello che altri show inserirebbero in un'ora e più di girato (vero Stranger Things?).
Dal punto di vista della trama abbiamo un bel po' di cui esser contenti, specie se siamo tra quelli che pretendono originalità ed innovazione da qualsiasi prodotto audiovisivo che si accingono a guardare.
Alan, come detto, è un tranquillo e importante psicologo. I primi minuti ci dicono immediatamente che qualcosa deve essere sfuggito al suo controllo visto che lo vediamo incatenato ad un letto senza possibilità di uscire dalla stanza in cui ci viene presentato.

As usual, today I am bringing you inside a new Preview of an article that in a few days or weeks you will see In the Mind of a SerialFiller, my blog entirely focused on the world of TV series and of which, for the past few months, I have decided to constantly give you, in advance of what I will publish, most of the posts you will see on www.serialfiller.org.
An unexpected thriller?
An unreleased Carrel?
An atypical drama?
The Patient, airing for the past few weeks on FX, is the series you don't expect, the one where the protagonist is catapulted into a reality you never expected to find in a series where he, the protagonist, is a quiet, brilliant psychologist and where the plot twist that characterizes the pilot shocks you as much as it would shock you to find a plum on a margherita pizza.
The beauty is that, despite the shock, the ploy works and like it works.
Steve Carrel (The Morning Show, The Office, Space Force) is the psychologist mentioned above. His name is Alan Strauss and he seems to be one of those doctors to be trusted, who have written famous books and who for the mental health of their patients would invent any therapy, as long as it is within the bounds of ethics and the law.
Where is it that the pilot succeeds in subverting the rules?
Go further, go beyond the poster and you will know (or better yet watch the pilot).
That FX was, for as long as I can remember, a gold mine where nuggets of all kinds could be found, from Sons Of Anarchy to American Crime Story, from Legion to Atlanta, from What We Do In The Shadows to the very recent The Bear, was common knowledge.
The Patient fits into the tradition of U.S. cable TV, giving us a highly original plot but also a structure, which although not unique, represents, certainly, a rarity.
The Patient, in fact, is a TV series that has the format of a comedy but the substance of a drama. In a nutshell, we will be faced with a 20-minute-per-episode show (Hallelujah!) but one that poses (and does well) as a drama, as an excellent psychological thriller. It's a delight because it manages to condense into a short time what other shows would fit into an hour or more of footage (right Stranger Things?).
Plot-wise, we have quite a bit to be happy about, especially if we are among those who demand originality and innovation from any audiovisual product they are about to watch.
Alan, as mentioned, is a quiet and important psychologist. The first few minutes immediately tell us that something must be out of his control as we see him chained to a bed with no possibility of leaving the room in which we are introduced.
