Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.

Un bel thriller alla HBO?

Un cast d'eccezione?

Un mistero da risolvere?

Avrei dovuto parlarne al termine della visione della prima stagione (già integralmente rilasciata in USA su HBOMax ed in Italia su Sky) ma ho voluto, comunque, pubblicare un post di first impression in seguito alla visione dei primi 2 episodi di The Staircase, miniserie thriller con un cast stellare e con una potenzialità enorme.
Già da qualche mese l'avevo adocchiata e la presenza del premio Oscar Colin Firth mi entusiasmava, e non poco.
Volgo lo sguardo verso il pilot e scopro che nel cast, oltre a Firth ci sono anche Toni Collette, Michael Stuhlbarg, Parker Posey, Sophie Turner e, udite - udite, il figlio di Schwarzenegger! Un parco attori veramente di primo ordine e veramente ben assemblato quello che ci presenta la serie HBOMax.
Ma la trama? I personaggi? L'atmosfera?
Altrettanto intrigante?

Si.
Decisamente si.
Nulla di clamoroso, intendiamoci, ma mi è sembrato di ritrovare quelle atmosfere alla Mare of Easttown (qui la recensione), con indagini difficili, voglia di trovare un colpevole, brave persone che sono brave davvero, brave persone che potrebbero essere cattive, la giustizia che prova a fare il suo corso, i giornalisti che provano a mettere le mani sulla nuova storia alla O.J. Simpson, avvocati costosissimi, vittima ben voluta, segreti ed una costruzione dei personaggi e della tensione che promette bene.
Solido, solidissimo impianto, un po' come quello recentemente riscontrato in occasione della visione del pilot di Black Bird, nuova serie Apple TV Plus con Taron Edgerton e Ray Liotta.
Ghiottoni di un piccolo recap? Volete sapere di che stiamo parlando?
Michael Peterson (Colin Firth) è un family man, scrittore ed editorialista, molto onesto e pare apprezzato dalla comunità. Ha 5 figli, derivati da 2 matrimoni diversi. Ha una moglie, interpretata da Toni Collette, che muore fra le sue braccia in circostanze che si riveleranno sempre più misteriose col passare dei minuti.
Michael Peterson amava troppo sua moglie per poter anche solo essere immaginato colpevole. La moglie amava lui. Quella sera, il figlio Todd, li aveva sentiti ridere e scherzare. No. Michael Peterson non può essere colpevole e gli autori riescono a convincerci totalmente di questo. Qualcosa di strano, però, sembra aleggiare su questa morte che pareva essere accidentale.
Passano i minuti e Peterson viene disegnato sempre più, da inquirenti ed autori, come un possibile carnefice.
Sarà vero?
Il dubbio, come il mistero, cresce. Colin Firth è favoloso nell'interpretare il marito leale e innamorato ed il padre benevolo e benvoluto, devastato dalla morte della moglie ma che poi, quando le indagini porteranno a lui riveleranno una persona molto più ambigua e duplice di quanto avevamo immaginato.
Ambiguità e duplicità non sono segni di colpevolezza eppure, anche all'interno della sua stessa famiglia, qualcuno volterà lui le spalle.
In molti inizieranno a dubitare di lui.
Altri no.
E allora, come ogni ottimo thriller sa fare, a fine episodio ci resta un dubbio atroce.
Michael Peterson ha ucciso sua moglie?
E questo è quanto di meglio si possa chiedere ad una serie di questo tipo.
Per questo, ed altro ancora, The Staircase è promosso a pieni voti.
Almeno per ora.

As usual, today I am bringing you inside a new Preview of an article that in a few days or weeks you will see In the Mind of a SerialFiller, my blog entirely focused on the world of TV series and of which, for the past few months, I have decided to constantly give you, in advance of what I will publish, most of the posts you will see on www.serialfiller.org.

A good HBO thriller?

An exceptional cast?

A mystery to solve?

I was supposed to talk about it at the end of the viewing of the first season (already released in its entirety in the US on HBOMax and in Italy on Sky) but I wanted, nonetheless, to publish a first impression post following the viewing of the first 2 episodes of The Staircase, a thriller miniseries with a stellar cast and enormous potential.
I had been eyeing it for a few months already and the presence of Oscar winner Colin Firth excited me, and not a little.
I turn my eyes to the pilot and discover that in addition to Firth, the cast includes Toni Collette, Michael Stuhlbarg, Parker Posey, Sophie Turner and, hear - hear, Schwarzenegger's son! A truly first-rate and truly well-assembled pool of actors what the HBOMax series presents us with.
But what about the plot? The characters? The atmosphere?
Equally intriguing?

Yes.
Definitely yes.
Nothing sensational, mind you, but I felt like I was rediscovering those Mare of Easttown (review here) atmospheres, with difficult investigations, a desire to find a culprit, good people who are really good, good people who might be bad, justice trying to run its course, journalists trying to get their hands on the new O.J. Simpson-esque story, high-priced lawyers, well-intended victims, secrets, and a building of characters and tension that shows great promise.
Solid, very solid setup, somewhat like that recently encountered when viewing the pilot of Black Bird, a new Apple TV Plus series starring Taron Edgerton and Ray Liotta.

Michael Peterson (Colin Firth) is a family man, writer and columnist, who is very honest and seems to be liked by the community. He has 5 children, derived from 2 different marriages. He has a wife, played by Toni Collette, who dies in his arms under circumstances that will prove increasingly mysterious as the minutes pass.
Michael Peterson loved his wife too much to even be imagined guilty. His wife loved him. That night, their son Todd had heard them laughing and joking. No. Michael Peterson cannot be guilty, and the authors manage to totally convince us of that. Something strange, however, seems to hover over this death that appeared to be accidental.
Minutes pass and Peterson is drawn more and more, by investigators and authors, as a possible perpetrator.
Will it be true?
The doubt, like the mystery, grows. Colin Firth is fabulous in playing the loyal, loving husband and benevolent, well-loving father, devastated by his wife's death but who later, when the investigation leads to him reveals a person far more ambiguous and duplicitous than we had imagined.
Ambiguity and duplicity are not signs of guilt and yet, even within his own family, some will turn their backs on him.
Many will begin to doubt him.
Others will not.
And then, as any good thriller knows how to do, we are left with an excruciating doubt at the end of the episode.
Did Michael Peterson kill his wife?
And that is as good as one can ask of a series of this kind.
For this, and more, The Staircase is promoted with flying colors.
At least for now.
