When I first arrived in Auckland, New Zealand, my initial thought was "Hawaii." Then I learned about the Māori culture, and I began to realize that this was no coincidence. Both the Hawaiian aborigines and the Māori were believed to have been descended from the same Polynesian ancestors, which explains why their cultures, languages, and traditions are nearly identical.
This is an image I took of Rangitoto Island, the youngest and largest of the 48 volcanoes in Auckland. Luckily for this windsurfer, it has been inactive for over 500 years.
