TestTone: the boring little utility you end up needing constantly
Most plugin folders fill up with stuff that promises a new sound. TestTone is the opposite. It's a test signal generator from Jun Murakami, currently at version 1.0.5, and its whole job is to hand you a sine tone or pink noise the moment you need one.
I threw it on a track to check a new interface's routing and it clicked right away. The frequency slider has preset buttons at 20, 40, 50, 60, 100, 440, 1k, 2k, 10k and 20k Hz, so you're not dragging a fiddly knob trying to land on exactly 1k. Same deal with level: quick buttons from -40 up to 0 dB, and it sits at -18 on load, which is a sane default. There's an L/R switch and a big red ON button. That's the entire interface and honestly that's the point.
It covers just about every format: VST3, AU, AAX, LV2 and CLAP, on macOS, Windows and Linux. The page has downloads for Windows and macOS right there, and you can also open a web demo in the browser without installing anything. For a thing that exists to check gear and signal chains, it doesn't get much simpler than this.
