“Can I trust her,” asks Raymond.
tic-tic-tic-tic… Vincent Monroe taps out the letters one by one. His head and face are still heavily bandaged, and he cannot see or speak. Patiently, Raymond waits by the bed for his friend to answer the question.
Tic-tap…tic-tic-tic-tap…tic…
Raymond cannot remember where he learned Morse code, or when he had used it last, but he was having little problem translating as Monroe drums his fingers against the metal bars of the hospital bed. He looks over the bed at Eudora, wondering if she understands. The way she is watching, he is sure she does.
Tap…tap-tap-tap.
The message is complete, and Raymond has his answer: You have to.
Raymond sighs and leans back in his chair. His sleepless vigil has lasted fifty-five hours and he is utterly drained. Over the last two days Raymond had periodically caught guards lurking around Monroe’s room, trying to sneak inside while Raymond napped. Raymond isn’t sure what they wanted with Monroe – perhaps it was out of genuine concern for the doctor - but he didn’t think it wise to find out. The guards have been behaving strangely since his return, more than usual, and Raymond didn’t trust them. For two days he had been alone, no one to talk to, no one to watch out for him, a precarious situation indeed down in the Tomb. Now that Monroe has vouched for Dr. Temple, Raymond lets himself relax ever so slightly. He is not alone, after all. After a moment of deep silence, he looks at Eudora.
“Okay, then.”
