This is the Latest Blue Color Found in the last 200 yers.

Indigo, Ultramarine, Cyan, Navy, and Azure are just five of the various variations of available blue color. However, the discovery of blue color stalled after Louis Jacques Thenard discovered the Cobalt blue pigment in 1802.

Now, after 200 years, a chemist managed to find a new blue pigment. Named YInMn blue, Mas Subramanian who is also a professor at Oregon State University managed to find the pigment in his laboratory in 2009.

Regarding the findings, Subramanian interviewed by Fast Company May 10, 2017 said the incident was just a pleasant accident because we did not look for it.

Indeed, this breakthrough occurred because a student in his laboratory incorporated yttrium, indium, and manganese oxide (an oxygen-containing chemical) on fire. When the mixture is pulled out, the color has turned into a bright blue.

Immediately, the color is patented by the Subramanian laboratory.

The unexpected discovery is very sweet fruit. Shepherd Color Company, the parent company of Crayola, purchased permission to use YinMn's blue from Subramanian and plans to include it as a member of their latest color.

The pigments produced at such high temperatures are very stable (not reacting when heated, cooled, or mixed with water or acid) so it is suitable for use as a dye.

Shepherd Color Company only needs permission from the US Food and Drug Administration to start producing it and market it later this year in place of the Dandelion yellow crayon that retired in March.

They are also holding a competition to give YinMn blue a new name that is easier to pronounce.

Smith Holland, CEO and President Crayola, said in a press release we are trying to keep our color palettes innovative and trend-fitting. That is why we are very pleased to introduce a new blue crayon inspired by YinMn pigments
