Why the coin is informally regarded as the tiananmen square protest coin is because it was released during the protest and recalled in an act to try and end the protest (I'm not quite sure how it would have effected it though)

As it was recalled, not every coin got called in, so the original mint that's wasn't recalled is regarded as the protest coin.
