On a warm and slightly damp afternoon, when the clouds indicated that it would soon rain, I felt interested in exploring the Mimosa pudica plant. With my smartphone in hand, I hoped to capture this amazing moment.
Mimosa pudica or better known as the sensitive plant is one of nature's surprises in the plant world. Its name, Mimosa pudica, reflects its special property: its leaves respond to touch by instantly closing. This interesting phenomenon is what makes this plant so charming and always challenging to photograph.
This plant originates from Tropical America, but has spread to various parts of the world such as Asia, Africa and Australia. The leaves resemble betel leaves, equipped with smooth strands and small sharp spines, adding to their charm. When I approached this plant with my smartphone, I was amazed when the leaves closed like 'shame'.
Apparently, this is all thanks to a special structure in the leaves called the “pulvinus”. The pulvinus controls the water pressure inside the leaf cells, and when the leaf is disturbed, the water pressure changes suddenly, forcing the leaf to close. The sensitive nature of Mimosa pudica not only attracts human attention, but also becomes the object of in-depth scientific research.
Apart from being a research material, this plant also has a history of use in traditional medicine in various cultures. Some communities in Latin America even use Mimosa pudica extract to treat skin and digestive problems. But keep in mind that I don't have in-depth medical knowledge, so this is just additional information.
Interestingly, this sensitive nature is not just for our amusement. This is also nature's way of protecting plants from leaf eaters and pests. So, when we see Mimosa pudica plants in the garden on a humid afternoon like this, we can reflect on the wonders of nature and how every creature, including plants, plays an important role in this complex ecosystem.
