It is fun to read your experience. I have not been in France but I heard a lot about the french people who sometimes might not respond in English and only in french.

I believe if I were to have a black espresso I definitely would ask for sugar as I can't enjoy coffee without sugar. I like your story with policemen regulating the traffic, that was really nice from their side.
