After my latest dashboard that looked at the weekly most rewarded authors I thought that it would be great to have a historical perspective on the numbers of active weekly authors and the annual trends.
This is what prompted me to build this 5 Years of Hive Weekly Active Authors dashboard.
August of 2021 is a special time for me, not only this happens to be around five years ago, but this is also the exact time that I have joined Hive. So this basically represents the time I have been around and this is all that I have seen on Hive. To be fair though, I have joined Hive not to post, but to play Splinterlands and I didn't really get really involved in posting on Hive until 2023 or about two years later. This is despite the fact that Splinterlands really encouraged their players to get involved on Hive at that time and rewards from posting Splinterlands content were much higher that time. Here you can see from my Hive Report Card my post activity on Hive and you can see that I was really active for about 2.5 to 3 years here:
So with that as a preface and a little bit of my background let's dive into what the Hive Weekly Authors Dashboard shows us:
This view shows that we actually had a pretty good growth of Hive Weekly Authors from around six thousand authors to the peak of around nine thousand weekly authors around end of December of 2021. What caused this growth? I think it was correlated to Splinterlands players starting posting and all the activity on Hive blockchain from new Splinterlands users coming in and spending money on Splinterlands stuff helped the price of Hive and drove even more activity in Hive Authors to get more rewards.
Since then we had a few recoveries in the number of active weekly authors like at the start of 2023 from five thousand weekly active authors to six thousand weekly authors. We also had a nice recovery at the end of 2024 to the start of 2025 when we went from four thousand weekly authors to five thousand weekly authors. But overall since the start of 2022 we had a brutal downtrend in the number of weekly active authors. where we went from the peak of nine thousand weekly users at the start of 2022 to around two thousand weekly active users 4.5 years later...
This view shows an even more troubling picture. What this shows that in the last five years we pretty much lost active weekly authors every single week compared to the year before with the exception of three weeks at the start of 2022 and two weeks in April of 2025 as well as seven weeks in September of last year.
Additionally, this year the trend of loosing weekly Active Authors on Hive has greatly accelerated and entered a record negative territory... Things are not looking very good on Hive at the moment and hopefully major stakeholders like @blocktrades have some ideas on how this situation can be improved.
There are more charts in the Weekly Active Authors Dashboard and I encourage you to explore it. The final set of six charts I am going to share here is in the screenshot above that shows how Weekly active Authors on Hive have changed in the last five years.
The last good year was 2021, but second half of 2025 and 2026 look like a real free fall in the number of authors. The only major factor I can see is that the price of Hive really dropped during this period.
I am still working on this dashboard. Unlike the weekly Author and Curator dashboards this one needs to be finalized to update weekly, I am still working on that. I am also working on Hive Witness view dashboard, but that one is not ready for prime time just yet...
I encourage you to explore this new dashboard and share your thoughts in comments below.
