The wind is offshore. Getting the power home takes infrastructure.
Belgium's Princess Elisabeth Energy Island has secured a €1 billion green credit facility from the European Investment Bank.
The facility funds the electrical backbone: substations, transformers and high-voltage cables connecting offshore wind to the Belgian grid. The artificial island is about 45 km off the coast.
The €1 billion figure is the credit facility, not the total project cost. Transmission is the part that moves renewable generation from a project at sea to the people and businesses that use it.
