Hail to the Hive!
We arrived at our current mooring on the Birmingham - Fazeley canal a few days ago and immediately recognised it as a place we would probably hang out for a while due to the fact that it was so damned beautiful.
I'd spotted a signpost as we chugged slowly by and realised that there were a lot of nature trails next to the area of the canal and fancied the idea of stretching my legs to explore the area while we were here.
So this morning, as the sun was showing its face, I decided I'd go and have a stroll and see what there is to see on the side of the canal we are on, as there are also walking trails on the other side also.
So down the canal tow path to find an entry point.
Just before i reached a set of locks I saw what looked to be an access point so peeled off the tow path and up the steps.
Well I ain't on a bike and I have no dog but the lower path sign I guess affects me.
The lakes are actually old gravel pits that are now all filled with water and have become an important habitat for alot of birds so they have now protected the area to "give nature a home" as the sign says. Corny but at least it has provided a habitat for many types of birds as their original habitats for breeding and migration had been destroyed.
With it being such a nice day I am really enjoying the stroll and there's hardly a soul about. I have only seen one couple so far.
The sound of birds chirping and chattering is constant and fairly loud. They are clearly enjoying the area.
The do's and do nots and the can and can't signs abound. Glad to see they make owners keep their dogs on a lead here as otherwise I can see a few birds being harassed as a lot of the nests are apparently on the edge of the water.
It really is turning into a very pleasant day indeed. The canal is now not far over the trees on my left so i am sure i will find access at some point and complete a full circle.
Although as i keep getting tempted down these deserted paths there's always the possibility i will get a little lost.
And I can never resist a bridge.
I am not overly worried about losing my way as i wander around. There's nobody around and if the worst happens and I do lose my way I think i can remember the way back. I just remembered I left my phone in the boat. Oh dear.
The countryside in this area is like something out of the Shire in Lord of the Rings. I half expect a Hobbit to come out of the bushes and give me a cheery hello.
Ah ha! this looks like canal access and that looks like a canal bridge behind it.
Yes indeed back on the canal. The views from the bridge are lovely.
it will be down and onto the canal and turn left. Getting hungry now so back to the boat for me. Think I've earned myself a beer or 4!
