DISCUSSION TOPIC:
The Lord's Suffering Servant
BIBLE READING:
Isaiah 52: 13- 53:12
Qs. 2. See Questions HERE.
DISCUSSION:
Today's text is on the reconciliation by the Servant in the world. The early Church witnessed how Jesus' life and death fulfilled the prophecy of the suffering Servant. The text falls into: 52:13-15 - God announces the exaltation and success of the Servant's mission.
Here God is represented as speaking in the first person, 'I'. It announces that the Servant is to have great success in His mission and as a result there will be a radical change from His present low Estate to a very high one. How awesome is God's revelation of Himself to you? What does this prompt you to consider?
53:1-9 - The Confession of the Kings of the nations
Here the Servant of the Lord is presented in the third person "He". The answer to the question in 53:1 is that no one could have believed what we have heard. V. 3 specifies in detail the situation of the Servant of the Lord - "despised and rejected, a man of sorrows and grief". Why do you think the kings of the earth display this attitude to the suffering Servant? V. 5 points out that it was because of our transgressions that He was wounded. The sins of the world brought this on Him. Note the dumbness of the Servant in vs. 7-9 - Completely obedient unto death though undeserved. Is there any personal lesson for you here?
53:10-12 - Here we see the life of the Servant in line with the purposive action of God. Consider what property the Servant will have in the future. Vs. 10&11- What do you see here as the blessing for us men?
So then:
What impact does Jesus' suffering and death have on your daily life? See Gal. 2:20.
Prayer:
Ask the Lord to help you adopt the life of the Servant and benefit from all He did.
