The Lord Comforts Zion
BIBLE READING:
Isaiah 51: 1-16
Qs. 1,7. See Questions HERE.
DISCUSSION:
This passage deals with the pilgrimage to Zion, what every Israelite knew in Old Testament times. How are these pilgrims described in vs. 1? How is this achieved today? It is also said to them that they have grasped the heart of true religion, holiness of life (vs. 7) flowing from a personal relationship with God. How do you think you can attain this? The people addressed were true children of Abraham (v. 2) not just his physical descendants; they also shared in his faith in God. So are you but what does it mean to you?
The promises of God drew the pilgrims to Zion which was to be rebuilt. The wastelands around her will blossom again like the Garden of Eden - a great promise to claim! Another group of pilgrims is referred to in vs. 4-6, coming from the nations and the distant Islands. They are drawn towards Zion by the justice and light about to be a reality. These will be the ransomed of the Lord who will enter the city with singing and joy. What does this say to you?
Isaiah also looks beyond the return from Babylon to the end of all things when God will bring His people to their final resting place. Notice Isaiah's quiet impatience as he cries to God, to do it now (vs. 9&10). Do you share this longing of the Prophet?
In 51:12-16, there is an affirmation that the covenant between the Lord and Israel is intact. "I am the Lord your God, you are my people." It is the language of relationship and commitment; not their commitment to God but God's to them: the ground of their security and comfort. How far do you relate to this supreme relationship between God and His people? Is your level of commitment to Christ in line with His relationship with you?
And so:
The day is coming when we shall all be comforted from our work on earth.
Prayer:
Make your own prayer of commitment responding to God's promise to be with you always.
