DISCUSSION:

There are a few promises in the passage. Meditate on them. The task and the challenges associated with proclamation of the gospel are enormous and may appear impossible. However, when compared with a farmer who must do much hard work (bush clearing, ploughing, planting, weeding, etc.) before the time of harvesting; what we are called to do (harvesting) is the final and happiest part of the work. Jesus had died and risen and has thereby defeated the devil and his demons (v. 19); the Holy Spirit is constantly doing the preliminary work of conviction of sin and revelation of Christ to people (vs. 21-22). No wonder the 72 were surprised at the results and came back testimonies of victory. When we too go out in faith, looking unto Jesus we will return with many surprises and with great joy. We will also bring much rejoicing to our Lord and the heavenly host (vs. 18&21a, compare, Luke 15:7). The miracles (of salvation and deliverance) will, no doubt, excite us. However, what should rather be our greatest joy (v. 20)?
