DISCUSSION:

After spending the night on the mountain, Jesus and the three disciples returned to meet a crowd waiting for Him. A father desperately needed Jesus to rescue His only child from the grips of an evil and destructive demonic spirit. Jesus' other disciples had failed to free the boy from the demon that had possessed him. How does Jesus' lament about the state of faithlessness confirm the truth of Hebrews 11:6 and John 15:5c? Demon-possession is an experience with which many families, especially in Africa, can identify and some have also suffered from it emotionally, socially and economically. The temptation to seek help from our traditional healers is so strong.

Jesus requests that the boy be brought to Him. He cures him by rebuking the demonic spirit (v. 42). Jesus' action clearly shows to all that He has authority over evil spirits. They bow at His command. Notice the response of the crowd in v. 43a. Notice also that the father, who remained resolute and did not allow the failure of the disciples to distract him, received his son completely healed.

So:

Resist every temptation to seek cure from any of our traditional healers. Jesus has authority over all manner of sickness. Trust and turn to Him.

Prayer :

Lord Jesus, I am glad that you have the power and compassion to heal all manner of sickness including demon-possession. Help me resist every temptation to look for help elsewhere.
