DISCUSSION TOPIC:
His Banner Over Me Is Love
BIBLE READING:
Song of Songs 2: 1-15
Qs. 2. See Questions HERE.
DISCUSSION:
Notice how the beloved describes herself in v. 1. Both Sharon and the valley were popular grazing spots (see 1 Chronicles 27:29) where many flowering plants grow and both lovers were shepherds. Read vs. 2-3 again and observe how the lover and the beloved describe each other : "A lily among thorns" and "an apple among the trees of the forest." What does this show? Notice also the names they call each other: lover (vs. 2, 10&14), the beloved (vs. 3, 8, 9&10). After years of marriage, do you still love and adore your spouse as the most beautiful of all women /most handsome among all men? What pet name have you called your loved one most recently?
Read vs. 3-7. The lover has taken his beloved into the banquet hall and spread his banner of love over her. His love for her is not a hidden one, but is displayed for all to see like a military banner. Showing your love for your wife publicly convinces her that you truly love her and gives her the confidence to be truly intimate with you. V. 7 is like the refrain (chorus) in the song (see 3:5; 5:8; 8:4). It is always spoken by the beloved and always in a context of physical intimacy with her lover. Moments of intimacy, aloneness, quietness in relationship are to be cherished and do not need interruptions. Do you have such moments with the Lord, your greatest lover? Any relationship that does not deliberately cultivate such moments has denied itself of something valuable and may be heading for failure.
What next?
There are foxes that easily destroy marriage relationships and our relationship with God (v. 15). Identify them in your own relationship situation and ask for grace to catch them before they cause havoc.
Prayer:
Lord, may you help me to relate intimately with you and with my spouse.
