Go And Do Likewise!

DISCUSSION:
Imagine you are the one discussing with Jesus. What are some of the things that may shock you in the story? Like this man, many of us are focusing on "doing" to earn heaven (compare Luke 18:18). However, entering heaven is not through "doing" but by "receiving" that which has been done for us (Mark 10:15). The "doing" (living out our faith) is the consequence of our salvation (Ephesians 2:8-10). This story is a good example of what the outworking of our faith should involve: be a loving neighbour to whomever the Lord brings in your path.
As we seek to do this, to 'love our neighbours', however, we must ensure we do not neglect the first and most important part, 'being' in constant fellowship with the Lord. Martha was consumed with "doing" that she missed out on "being" with the Lord. Spiritual activities are important and necessary. But, when we are so occupied with many activities, we often have no time for the Lord we are seeking to serve.
So then:
No one can be saved for serving the Lord and doing good work. These become meaningful only after we have been graciously saved.
Prayer:
May I never neglect my love for you and for my neighbours, dear Lord.
