People who carry on about the beauty of deer in the yard obviously haven't tried growing flowers, or vegetables for themselves to eat. I remember one non-gardening woman who said, "Oh, surely you can share a little with the deer." Um, deer don't share. They eat it all. Anything I want to protect from the deer is inside a 7-foot barbed wire fence....which doesn't stop the ground squirrels, alas.
The deer population where my sister lives had gotten out of hand. Those "in charge" don't care, so way too many deer live in the area, and they are starving. They have eaten many of her flowers that are supposedly deer-resistant, many of which the deer used to leave alone years past when there weren't as many deer. She is starting to put out artificial flowers for color in the yard.
