I remember old times when we used dial-up internet connection. The best speed you could get was 33kbit/s with the best 56k dial-up modem.

Now I use mobile 4G with the same speed but in mbit/s (with m). It means thousand times faster. But it does not mean that my experience with web became better because it is now faster. No. Nowadays web is more bloated because we do not care about it anymore. Or at least most of us.

If you want to be a professional in web, you should start to care about speed of your website and content that you provide for your users. You remember 10+ years ago what Google found out about speed.

Half a second delay caused a 20% drop in traffic. Half a second delay killed user satisfaction.

Yeah, sure - 10 years later everybody is using internet with fiber network speeds and it is fast enough. There are a lot of countries or places and situations where good internet connection is luxury. Now we have more and more mobile users with limited mobile connection and traffic usage.

But that does not matter. Time passes and situation changes but you are just a professional and it is your habit. That's it.

So, how can we optimize web pages? Or, for example, lets take Steemit.com? We can try to keep to our habit by optimizing images that we post here.

Here is the tool I use to optimize images - ImageOptim.

ImageOptim

You just drag and drop image here and it does all the job for you. And saves from screenshots up to 60% or more than half of file size.

These are small things that you do not thing about in your every day life but they make huge impact.

When I write posts for Steemit in my offline text editor MacDown, I prepare images with this tool. I can continue to write while images are optimized in the background.

Enjoy! 😀

Update

I must say that unfortunately for Steemit.com it does not work. Looks like they are rewriting all images and they become twice as big. But I hope that some day will fix it or optimize on their side as it is done in many sites.

However, I am going to stick to my habit. Startups comes and goes but our habits stays. 👊
