@elpastor, we are called to do the will of God and attend to his mandate at all times because as you say: “If someone hears the word but does not, it is similar to the man who considers his natural face in a mirror.
That said we could say that if we hear his word and do not obey his commands, everything we say or do is in vain because it has no value.
