I am lucky to be in a progressive company. They have already changed (collaboratively) employment contracts to include "remote working".
This means we get a choice between the office and home - without any major tax implications.
I personally hate working from home during the school holidays as my productivity goes down a lot. But I also know people whose productivity has increased a lot since they started working from home (and they are in the main much happier).
The balance is getting the human interaction and communications correct. You cannot let someone just "do their own thing" at home, but you also cannot over communicate / micro manage. You have to have that element of trust. We have spent a lot of worldwide training resource on just this - and also so that the company is aligned in expectations (e.g. no-one looks up or down at "remote working" or "office-based working").
