One of the many facts I picked up about Holland when I visited there is that the reason for the frontages of the houses being so narrow, but tall, is due to the taxation laws.

Historically (during the Dutch "Golden Age") the annual tax on buildings was based on the frontage width of your property rather than its commercial value. That is why they made them narrow but tall. It is different nowdays, but the buildings still exist this way due to legacy.
