In my family, there are no photos of our parents or grandparents wearing a cap and gown. My father was born in 1917 and my mother in 1918—a time when it was extremely rare for people from modest economic backgrounds to attain higher education degrees. There is, however, one photo of someone in a cap and gown: my sister Nina, the eldest of the three girls among the five of us siblings. She graduated from the Central Bible Institute (IBC) in Barquisimeto. They made an exception for her; although the program required a high school diploma, she was admitted to the three-year residential course having completed only the fourth grade of primary school.
Later, when she started her own family, she instilled the value of knowledge in her four children. Today, all of her children and grandchildren are professionals, and her great-grandchildren are following the same path. At 74 years old, she is currently studying Mandarin Chinese online and learning Korean on her own—simply because she loves Korean dramas and wants to be able to understand them without relying on subtitles.
