Plot
Kingdom was a manga based on the the Warring States Period from the Chinese history which ended in 221 BC when Ying Zheng, the King of Qin unified China which was previously divided by many states, continuously warring for each other. The main protagonist of the story, Xin together with his friend, Piao were both war-orphans that promised to become "Great Generals under the Heavens" but Piao was taken by the prime minister of Qin to be the body double of Ying Zheng and soon dies because of the power struggle for the throne. At first, Xin becomes angry to Ying Zheng but would later help him to resolve the power struggle, upholding Piao's last words and to fulfill their dream and would latter be awarded with a military position as a soldier. Xin would then continue to make more achievements and rise in ranks while also helping Ying Zheng with his goal of unification.
Why I Choose This Manga?
I have read countless mangas, manwha, manhua and even some American comics so it was a tough choice what to choose among them. I also want to refrain from the popular manga and genre like Isekai that was everywhere because I feel like they were overused so in the end, I came up with kingdom. It was categorized as Seinen and targeted for readers between the age of 18-40, which I think captures many members of the Hive community, Though, I do not how accurate it was, this was based on Chinese history so while we enjoy the reading it, we also learn about how early Chinese people lived their life and their culture during the times depicted on the manga. Unlike many fantasy manga that has over powered characters or has very thick plot armor, this manga often shocks me when a character with a very significant role meet their demise, some of them I felt a great attachment and I feel devastated when they meet their end. It is also not the type of manga with black and white characters which is to say "He is the protagonist so he is good while the other was the antagonist so he is bad". The characters here have dreams they want to fulfill and ideals they uphold as well as people they want to protect which would willingly fight for with their lives on the line. The fight scenes where not explosive like fantasy manga and just clashing of weapons and shields but it was very intense as for every slash, there is a life on the line. Even the simple exchange of words on a courtroom can be deadly as opposing political beliefs and ideologies clash with each other.
Kingdom has been in publication for 17 year and as of the writing of this post has 752 chapters with average of 20 page each chapters so it is quite a long read if you will start from the beginning but when you reached the end, you might crave for more just like me. If you think that it's too long to read all of these to catch up to the latest chapters, it has both anime and live action adaptation but the anima adaptation already goes for season 3 and is planed to have a season 4 next year so I would recommend the anime instead. In terms of art, its quite different from many manga, in particular with the character styles maybe because it's trying to appeal to the Chinese audience. The early chapters art were not that good but were very detailed and will gradually improve as the manga progress.
That was it for my Kingdom manga review. I'm sure there are many more aspects of this manga that I forgot to include on this post as I also try my best not to include any spoilers but I hope that I was able to get your attention enough to give this manga a try for yourself. It would also be nice to see your manga recommendations in the comment section.
Thank you for reading my post!
