Game Modifiers in Splinterlands change the conditions of every battle by limiting the cards that you can use, giving different abilities or debilitations, inflicting damage on units, and more. Depending on which rulesets are at play can dramatically influence what cards players will use, as they have to adapt their tactics on the fly so that they can win the battle. So, it is not an exaggeration to say that the Game Modifiers can sometimes pose more of a threat than your opponent.
A week ago, I talked about how sometimes the team has sunset some rulesets if the players feel it is not helping to make a good battle experience. However, there are some rulesets that were just added recently but seem to no longer be available in the current ruleset rotation in ranked battles, even though I personally don't think that it was such a bad modifier. The ruleset that I was talking about was Backlash.
As of the moment, Splinterlands has a total of 81 Game Modifiers. This is if we include both those rulesets that were retired from the game for whatever reasons and those time-limited rulesets. Except for Wood League, each league will get at least 1 modifier in battle, and they could go up to 3 rulesets depending on the league that the player is currently competing in.
And while looking for Seasonal Modifiers that Remains in Modern Ruleset Circulation, I suddenly noticed that I can't seem to see the Backlash ruleset from any of my battles, whether it was from ranked, tournaments, or brawls. I even checked the Top battles and randomly looked at the battles of random players to see if they ever encountered the ruleset in any of their past battles, but I did not find the Backlash modifier in any of them. So I turned into a conclusion that the ruleset has been sunsetted from the ruleset rotation, which is kind of weird because it has the following effect.
These rule sets are:
Backlash
All units that miss an attack take 2 true damage.
Backlash is a ruleset that will inflict 2 true damage when a unit misses their attack, and when we say true damage, it means that the damage is unmitigated and cannot be reduced by abilities such as Shield or Void. If we compare it to an ability, Backlash was very similar to the effects of the Backfire ability.
Backlash
When an enemy unit misses, deals 2 physical damage to them.
However, even when these two were very similar, they were still very different from one another in the way of what damage is being inflicted. They could even go back-to-back, when a unit that is played during the Backlash ruleset also has the Backfire to inflict up to 4 damage when the opponent misses their attack, which is kind of fun to see when your team was doing the dodging but not when your units were missing their target. And it's not as if Backlash is a ruleset that you cannot counter, when you have abilities such as True Strike, and it would just give more usecase for Archons like Captain Frankie that could give the True Strike ability.
Not being able to see Backlash from anyone's battles seems to imply that the ruleset was no longer included in the current ruleset rotation, maybe because of how similar it is to Backfire, but I do not really see any problem with it being around, and if it's really making battle not fun for other players, instead of completely removing it on the rotation, maybe just reduce the chance that it will be available to maybe one of of ten or twenty battles, because having more rulesets available will result for players to be more careful of what strategy they will use.
I will try to look once again later to see if this ruleset is still available, and maybe I'm just wrong, but for now,
Thank you, and see you on the next post!
