1 Steps After Arrival
Once your visa has been obtained and your arrival in the United States is confirmed, you may begin the process of applying for a Social Security Number (SSN). If you have received a visa that allows you to work, you are eligible to apply for an SSN. It is recommended that you wait approximately ten days after your arrival to allow the Department of Homeland Security sufficient time to verify your information.
2 SSN Application Procedure
To apply for an SSN, you must complete Form SS-5 and visit your nearest Social Security office. You will need to bring supporting documentation, such as a photo ID, your entry visa, and proof of your immigration status and work authorization (for example, an employment authorization document).
3 Timeframe for Receiving an SSN
Once your application has been submitted, your SSN will generally be sent by mail within two to eight weeks. It is essential to follow all instructions and provide all required documentation to avoid any delays in the process.
