Answer for Day 4 Problem

chrisrice@chrisrice is 35 years old and jancharlest@jancharlest is 22 years old (at present). 🎯

Let x be the present age of jancharlest@jancharlest in years. Since chrisrice@chrisrice is 13 years older than jancharlest@jancharlest, let (x + 13) be the age of chrisrice@chrisrice.

When we look at 9 years ago, the age of jancharlest@jancharlest was (x - 9) and the age of chrisrice@chrisrice was (x + 13 - 9) or simply (x + 4). Since it was stated in the original problem that 9 years ago, the age of chrisrice@chrisrice was twice the age of jancharlest@jancharlest, our equation can be worded into: "The age of chrisrice@chrisrice plus 4 is equal to 2 times the age of jancharlest@jancharlest after deducting 9 from it", or simply (x + 4) = 2 * (x - 9).

PresentPast (9 years ago)
jancharlest@jancharlestxx - 9
chrisrice@chrisricex + 13x + 4

(x + 4) = 2 * (x - 9)
x + 4 = 2x - 18
x - 2x = -18 - 4
-x = -22
x = 22

Since we represented the present age of jancharlest@jancharlest as x years old, and the value of x is 22, his age in years is 22. Since chrisrice@chrisrice is 13 years older than jancharlest@jancharlest, the age of chrisrice@chrisrice in years is (22 + 13) or simply 35.
