When we reached the dry park, the air began to feel noticeably lighter; the mounds of earth accumulating near the ruined buildings looked like soil stripped of nutrients—nothing but old sand where nothing grows anymore. As I moved from the shadows into the place where the light was beginning to filter through again, a sense of oblivion washed over my troubled heart; yet it was neither despair nor sadness I felt, but rather a sense of rest and relief. At last, I would meet my mother—the mother of us all.
