The Fight for a Free, Fair and Open Internet:
A speech that was given at the 2017 National Bioneers Conference, by Cory Doctorow.
Cory Doctorow, is one of my favorite internet culture thinkers, he also is a science fiction writer, open Internet activist, journalist and blogger (co-editor of boingboing.net), works for the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
One of Corey's major points is the fight for a free, fair and open Internet isn’t the most important fight on the planet, but you can’t win any of the other major battles without it. Although the Net is the nervous system of the 21st century, so far we have misunderstood and mismanaged it and made it susceptible to capture by the powerful and corrupt.
Cory will share his strategies to reclaim the global lifeline that should belong to all of us.
Also his essay "Net Neutrality Won't Save Us if DRM is Baked Into the Web" for Electric Frontier Foundation, where he write:
"Today, we should also think about other ways in which small numbers of companies, including net neutrality's biggest foes, are trying to gain the same kinds of control, with the same grave consequences for the open web. Exhibit A is baking digital rights management (DRM) into the web's standards.
ISPs that oppose effective net neutrality protections say that they've got the right to earn as much money as they can from their networks, and if people don't like it, they can just get their internet somewhere else. But of course, the lack of competition in network service means that most people can't do this."
