Introduced into the Rave Culture in 2006 on her 19th birthday, Kayla Brooke Terlosky, known as DJ Kitana, went to see her friend DJ a Halloween party that since changed her life and dream. Feeling the sense of family, unity, and culture the electronic scene brought forth for her, she was completely captivated. Kayla was so inspired by another females set, known as Hootie, who was throwing down a UK speed garage set, on vinyl. This inspired her to get her own Technics and Mixer within that year. Kayla said, “The bass, synths and drums fused with my soul that nighthawk and I never looked back.”
With being in a heavily dominated male industry, Kitana was told by her family and a lot of peers her success was, “unrealistic.” Using that motivation, she built a Vinyl collection of all different genres. “Electro House/garage/bassline music is what captivated my heart first. Then slowly but surely that love spilled over to other genres like breakbeats, drum and bass, dubstep, glitch hop and funk,” she said. Also adding, “there’s so much great music out there it’s hard for me to stick to just one genre. I like to take my audience on a musical journey through a variety sounds...My style is energy and love, ranging from downtempo dub to fast paced drum and bass and everything in between. Every set is different so it’s hard to adhered to any one genre or style.”
Kitana has shared the stage with one of the members of Emancipator for an improv set, DJ Heavy Grinder, Sketchy Pete,Lucii the Alien, Infected Mushroom, CAKED UP, and DJ Bonics. While also playing the Democratic National Convention in 2012 and named Top Female DJ in the Carolinas.
