Lying in bed would be an almost perfect experience if a man had a long enough colored pencil to draw on the ceiling. But most of the time it is not at hand. Personally, I think he can replace it with a few buckets of paint. Admittedly, while applying paint to the brush in the summer, it would probably leak profusely upon us, much like the wonderfully colored rain, which would have its downsides. I'm afraid we only have a drawing in black and white. The ceiling can serve us well; by the way, what else could it be used for?
If it wasn't for the nice experience of lying in bed, I probably wouldn't have discovered it. For years I have been searching for empty spaces in contemporary buildings - which would be handy for drawing. The paper is too small for allegorical topics. As Sirano de Bergerac would say, "Il me faut des géants" ("I need gin"). And nowhere, in any room, did I find anything. I came across endless patterns and a multitude of things that would interfere between me and my desires. I examined the walls, and to my disappointment I always came across wallpaper, and they are of an uninteresting design and desperately resemble one another. I do not understand why any arbitrary symbol (apparently without any religious or philosophical meaning) is scattered across all these walls, like smallpox. The Bible must be referring to the wallpaper when it says "do not speak much as Gentiles" (do not repeat all the same thing; cf. trans.). In my opinion, the oriental rug is a multitude of colors without any special meaning, such as the Turkish empire itself or a treat called 'Turkish delight' (ratluk). I do not know exactly what 'Turkish elation' is, but I suppose it is a massacre of Macedonians. In short, wherever I went, clutching a pen or a pumice stone in my hand, I could see that they had already overtaken me in an inexplicable way, and had corrupted their walls, covers and curtains with their neat, vulgar drawings.
And so, I didn't know what to draw, until I stopped lying in bed. It was only then that the whiteness of the sky broke out in front of me - vast, clear, undisturbed, a symbol of paradise purity and freedom. But wow! like all the heavens, this too was unattainable, and seemed harsher and more distant even than the sky blue that was visible through the window. My idea to paint a long pimple on him was discouraged - it doesn't matter who did it, it's about a person deprived of all political rights. Ready to compromise, I suggested that a wooden pemzle holder be put in the kitchen stove and turned into a turmeric; but it was not heard either. I remain convinced that it was precisely my brother-in-law, upon lying down, who came to mind the decoration of the ceilings of castles and vaults of the cathedrals with scattered fallen angels and victorious gods. I am sure that, just by practicing this ancient and venerable custom, Michelangelo could remember to transmit divine drama to the vaults of the Sistine Chapel, which could only take place in heaven.
Today, lying in bed takes a hypocritical and unhealthy attitude. There are many signs of decadence today, but one is the most dangerous: we are dealing with petty and insignificant things in our behavior, forgetting those great and important, the eternal obligations and rules of tragic human morality. Today's exuberance of third-party bans is far worse than the weakening of first-instance bans. Thus, for example, a charge of bad taste is considered more terrible than a charge of misconduct. Purity is no longer a consequence of righteousness, it has come to the fore, while righteousness is no longer on price. A theater writer can attack marriage as he pleases if he does not touch the manners of the high world; i met ibzenian pessimists who were disgusted with beer but had nothing against cyanic hydrochloric acid. This is particularly striking in the field of hygienic endeavors; including staying in bed. Instead of considering getting up early as an adjustment or a personal choice, many began to view him as a matter of superior morality. In the middle, however, is ordinary practical wisdom: there is nothing good and righteous in the early rising, just as there is nothing wrong and sinful in long lying.
Claims are those who get up early in the morning, and burglars, as far as I'm informed, get up the night before. In fact, social principles and ideals should be immutable, firm and well-established, and small everyday practices can be free, flexible and creative. With us the opposite is true: our worldviews are constantly changing, but our breakfast remains unchanged. I prefer that people have strong and rooted ideas, and when it comes to breakfast, sometimes they have it in the garden, sometimes in bed, even on the roof or on top of a tree. Have them discuss the basic principles, but do it in bed, in a boat or in a balloon. The unsettling rise of beautiful upbringing means that the virtues that exist based on mere custom are over-emphasized. At the same time, we forget about those others, who will not introduce or abolish any fashion, the sudden and brilliant virtues, such as true compassion or deep honesty. And if they just need us, where do we look for them?
One can get used to getting up at five in the morning. But they will hardly get used to being burned because of his beliefs; the first such attempt is usually fatal. Let's pay a little more attention to whether we are ready for an act of sudden courage. Maybe when I get out of bed, I will do something unimaginable and unreasonably beautiful?
I must nevertheless warn the beginners here in the study of the great art of lying in bed. Those who can do their work lying down (say, journalists), and even more those whose work cannot be done in bed (such as whaling), should not be taken for granted. But that's not the point. The caution is this: if you are really lying in bed, let it be for no reason and justification. I'm not talking, of course, about the seriously ill. If a healthy man lies in bed, let him do it without any excuse - then he will get out of bed and rise like a healthy man. And if he does it for some other hygienic reason, if he has a reasonable explanation, he can also stand up as a hypochondriac ...
