Un server può svolgere diversi ruoli a secondo dell'utilizzo. La banca o qualsiasi altro istituto di varia natura innanzitutto possiedono dei server molto sofisticati è robusti che funzionano molto bene. Infatti tali server vengono gestiti da speciali software per il coretto funzionamento della rete. Un server casalingo svolge più o meno le stesse funzioni ma molto diverso dal punto di viste di sicurezza ecc. Infine, tutti i server sono fatti per restare sempre accesi h24. Oltre tutto vengono usati su larga scala quali: aziende, banche e istituzioni. L'impiego dei server consiste nel mantenere una rete sempre accessibile in grado di ospitare siti web, conservare dati ecc. Poi ci sono anche quelle aziende che tengono milioni di server dislocati in varie parti del mondo come Facebook ad'esempio. Un altro esempio potrebbe essere che vogliate pubblicare un blog oppure un sito web quindi avrete bisogno di un servizio di hosting, che attraverso i loro servizi, vi permette di occupare una parte del loro spazio dedicato per la vostra pagina internet. Altre funzioni importanti che svolgono i server riguardano le poste elettroniche. Poi esistono i server locali, in sostanza sono sempre computer accesi ma fuori dalla rete (offline), quindi funzionano in loco. Quindi riassumendo il tutto i server non sono altro che computer accesi il cui compito sarebbe quello di : ospitare e collegare gli altri pc ecc.
