A month of light and purity
Yesterday marked the formal beginning of Kartik Masa, a period widely revered as the holiest month in our lunar calendar. For our family and our residential society, this transition introduces a beautiful, structured rhythm to our everyday schedule, bringing an array of meaningful rituals that completely transform the atmosphere around us. There is a distinct sense of peace that settles over the household as we step into this month-long journey of devotion, culminating on Kartik Purnima.
One of the central and most visually striking traditions we observe is the lighting of the Akhanda Deepa at our temple premises. This sacred lamp is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, lit with the intention of remaining continuously illuminated through the night to dispel spiritual and physical darkness. The history of hoisting a lamp high into the sky during Kartik (often referred to as Akasa Deepa) is deeply rooted in our Puranas. As you can see in the photograph, the diya is safely enclosed inside a protective container to shield the flame from the late autumn wind. Every single day, this container is carefully lowered to the ground so the lamp can be cleaned, refilled with oil or ghee, and relit with fresh prayers, before being raised high up into the sky once more.
Alongside the glowing warmth of the evening lamp, the mornings bring another exquisite visual tradition. Our temple priest has started creating stunning traditional floor art, uniquely known in our Odia culture as Jhoti Chita. Unlike ordinary rangoli, Jhoti is an intricate art form deeply intertwined with our spiritual heritage, traditionally created using a rich paste made from ground rice and water, applied gracefully with the fingers. The piece you see captured in the photo is just the beginning of the month’s celebrations. Watching the priest map out these sacred patterns on the temple floor provides a wonderful sense of continuity, keeping us anchored to the vast artistic legacy of our ancestors. I will try to capture most of them over the coming weeks, and share with you all towards the end of the month.
What makes this journey even more beautiful is how it gracefully leads us toward the festival of lights. Diwali sits perfectly at the midpoint of Kartik month, falling on the darkest new moon night of Amavasya. Rather than being an isolated celebration, Diwali is the grand, high-energy peak of the entire month. The single Akhanda Deepa we hoist high in the temple premises every evening paves the way for millions of smaller diyas that will soon illuminate every corner of our homes. Our daily Jhoti Chita will also transform on that special night, incorporating the sacred footprints of Goddess Lakshmi to welcome prosperity and joy.
Beyond the visual and ritualistic elements, the month of Kartik demands a disciplined shift in our dietary habits. A strict, non-negotiable rule ensures that no non-vegetarian food is cooked or brought into our home during this period. While I personally made the choice to permanently give up non-vegetarian food quite some time ago, the entire household beautifully aligns under this rule for the next thirty days. Interestingly, these ancient dietary restrictions are backed by highly practical, seasonal logic. Kartik marks a major environmental transition from the damp monsoon to the crisp chill of winter. Historically, sages understood that during this changing weather, livestock and animals are far more susceptible to seasonal illnesses, making the consumption of non-vegetarian food highly risky for human health. Furthermore, our digestive fire naturally slows down during this seasonal shift. Embracing a clean, satvik, plant-based diet perfectly gives our bodies a chance to detoxify. It sets a profoundly calm, peaceful, and reflective tone for our daily lives, giving us the physical lightness and mental clarity needed to focus entirely on spirituality.
